We were lucky to catch up with Joseph Giampino recently and have shared our conversation below.
Joseph, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
Someone once told me that to stay inspired you need to walk a different way home everyday. That could mean so many different things. It could be as simple as listening to a new artist or album, or opening a new book, or taking a new way to work, or exploring a new process, and even trying a new food. Inspiration and the creative process has it’s hills and valleys but you have to take the good with the bad. When the bad is is in the drivers seat sit back and relax (or try to). Remember its only part of the process.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name Is Joseph Giampino AKA SPCLGST and I’m the man and brush behind SPCLSIGNS (Special Signs). I’m a traditional Sign Painter located in Raleigh, NC who specializes in Hand Painted Signage, Gold Leaf, and Murals, Sign Painting is a long standing tradition and a trade that had been handed down from past generations. Sign Painting was swept under the rug when the introduction of computers, printed and vinyl signs were introduced. In the last few years the appreciation of hand crafted items and quality have been on the rise. People have begin to realize that quality and creativity are more important than speed.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
– do your research -put the time in
– don’t rush it
– don’t give up
-push yourself
How would you describe your ideal client?
a client that appreciates my worth, and trusts the process, allows me to give them feedback and understands the value of my work
