Meet Josh Guerrero

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Josh Guerrero. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Josh below.

Hi Josh, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

I believe that in order to build resilience, you have to do things that require it. Throughout my life, I’ve sought out and overcome many challenges. I made it through 12 weeks of Marine Corps boot camp, the toughest in the U.S. military. From there, I went on to do a vast array of other hard things. Such as living in a rural village in The Gambia, West Africa, for two years as a Peace Corps volunteer. During that time, my dwelling consisted of a square hut with no electricity, running water, flushable toilet, or internet. If I wanted to check social media, I had to ride my bike 18 miles to get to the nearest internet café. I got very good at cycling there, and even rode my bike across the entire country, a total distance of about 300 miles!

I’ve also dabbled in a few physical challenges as well. Including winning an MMA fight in the cage, thru-hiking 1,200 miles across the entire state of Michigan, running an ultramarathon, and taking part in other endurance challenges such as Tough Mudder, Spartan Race, and HYROX.

All of these challenges required resilience. And when you willingly seek out challenges, that resilience compounds and makes you very formidable against any challenge that life throws at you.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m the creator of All-Around Adventure, a brand committed to helping others with self-development through the lens of adventure. It started as a blog through which I would share my own adventure stories and the life lessons that I’ve learned along the way. Though not long after, I discovered the world of podcasting and decided to start one of my own, The All-Around Adventure Podcast. A show where you hear amazing tales from afar and the all-important life lessons that go along with them. I’ve found that I do much better sharing my story through spoken word instead of written word. Even my professors in grad school would tell you that my grades for oral presentations were much higher than my written essays!

As of now, the podcast has over 300 episodes and has welcomed a vast array of amazing guests who have incredible adventure stories and powerful lessons to share. I’ve spoken with special forces operators who’ve conducted dangerous missions around the world, authors who’ve written #1 New York Times bestselling books, entrepreneurs who’ve founded and continue to run successful businesses, and adventurers who’ve dared greatly and set world records. And the list goes on! It’s my hope that listeners of The All-Around Adventure Podcast will be inspired to seek out their own adventures and experience that same kind of personal growth that my guests and I have.

I’ve also begun to expand All-Around Adventure to offer my services to others through adventure consulting, copywriting, and public speaking.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

There are many qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge that I’ve developed along the way. But if I had to pick a top three, I would say: action, consistency, and discipline.

Action is very important at the start of any journey. There can be a lot of feelings of imposter syndrome or the fear of failure. There can also be paralysis by analysis or waiting for the “right” time to start something. To that I say, just start and figure things out as you go.

When I first started The All-Around Adventure Podcast, all I had was a recording app on my phone to record and upload episodes with. The sound quality was terrible, and my ideas didn’t flow very well. Now, I have a professional microphone, editing software, and have interviewed amazing guests both virtually and in person.

And with that came consistency. I continued to publish episodes on a consistent weekly basis to refine my skills as a podcaster and establish myself as an authority. No matter what journey you set out for in life, you can only move forward with consistent action.

However, there are moments when you’re going to feel tired or when life circumstances get in the way, along with other factors. And that’s when discipline comes into the picture. Discipline will keep you on track with the commitments that you made to yourself or to others when times get tough.

So I believe that action, consistency, and discipline are among the most important aspects to have. Not only for starting a journey, but for staying in it for the long haul!

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

Simple… focus on the next step. When I thru-hiked across the entire state of Michigan, it took me 116 days to cover the 1,200 miles that I needed to hike to complete it. I knew that if I dwelled on that, I could’ve become very overwhelmed and would’ve allowed so many negative thoughts to enter my head. So I knew that I had to narrow my focus to getting through the next day, the next mile, and the next step.

If you’re looking at all the problems you’re facing or tasks that you have to complete as a whole, then you surely will become overwhelmed. Instead, focus on addressing one problem or completing one task at a time.
