We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Josh Miller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Josh, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I always had desires of things I wanted out of life. However, It wasn’t until I put my trust in God completely that I found that I now can do anything with a purpose. I definitely have things I have grown to love and certain things that specifically feel I am made for. But there’s something amazing in knowing that in all you do you can shine.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Ultimately my life is about caring for people. Getting them the help they need or getting them to the help they need. I started the gym business because working out was something I enjoyed doing. I really didn’t know much about owning a business. Other than a side biz doing some promotional items using my graphic design skills.
Very soon I began to see how helping people feel better and more importantly, being able to speak into their lives, was one of the most fulfilling things I could do.
Over the course of the 15 years in the fitness industry I have fine tuned my craft and my ability to care for the people that come through my doors.
We have every potential client that comes through our doors schedule a free consultation. We also send them a questionnaire that helps us understand their fitness goals plus any injury history. This is to be completed before the consultation. Both of these help us plan a prescription for what their specific process will look like. We also want to make sure we are a good fit and that we are equipped to help them reach their goals. If we are not, we do our best to find somewhere that fits their needs. This could be another gym that is more of their vibe…or potentially a health care professional.
We believe that Health and Fitness is in the body, mind and spirit. We speak life into our clients.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Serving people. I worked 15+ years in the restaurant/service industry in almost all positions up to General Manager. Learning to go above and beyond to care for people has been probably the best thing Ive learned.
2. Communication skills and reading people. Most of my time in that industry was bartending and managing bars. I saw people at their best and worst. I got to the point that I could know if something was going good or bad before a first word. This is neck and neck as the most important thing in what I do now. Me knowing someone’s mental state is foundational to getting them effectively physically moving. Which then in turn helps them mentally. It’s pretty rad.
3. Getting mentorship. This is something I wish I did much earlier. I’m used to just handling things on my own, putting my head down and attacking what needs to be done. I can learn on my own and figure most everything out on my own. I think these are good qualities. Until they’re not. I have found that getting coaching has helped me take things to the next level and has helped me find better ways top get what is in my heart out to the business
I guess the advice I’d give to someone else or even my younger self is to reach out to others. Find someone that could objectively help you find and cultivate your personal skills. That they would put you outside of your comfort zone, helping you become the best you. I think most of the other stuff falls into place at that point.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents have done for me is twofold. They have shown me an example of what it looks like to work their tails off while still putting a priority on God and family. That’s a tough one to do. I realize that now.
