We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joshua Dillard a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Joshua, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
As a content creator and entrepreneur, I know how hard it can be to be bubbling with so many new ideas and wanting to see each and every one of them come to life. This is something I’ve struggled with in business: the gift of being “good” at so many things.
But being a creative entrepreneur offers me the best of both worlds. My creativity allows me to be passionate about my business. As an entrepreneur each one of our journeys is different. For me, passion is a huge part of my productivity over an extended period of time. If I’m not passionate about it, I have a hard time focusing. But we all know that passion alone isn’t enough. You also need discipline.
The entrepreneurial side of me makes me exercise discipline so that I’m not distracted by every new thing or idea that comes along. It also helps because there are times when I’m depleted of my passion. I’m tired and burnt out, discipline is essential in those moments. That’s what running a successful business takes, it takes passion, patience, and discipline.
One of the greatest things I’ve learned on my entrepreneurial journey is the ability to say “no”. Even if I’m saying “no” to myself.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a content creator & entrepreneur. Right now we are focused on building my personal brand by developing content to help our audience heal, repair, and restore their relationships through offering dope content and physical products that improve their relationships. This is important to me because family is important to me.
A huge part of that mission is our new brand, David’s Company. The mission of the David’s Company is to empower and develop men into elite leaders. the podcast will aid in achieving this mission by having conversations with men and women that are encouraging, real, challenging, and hopeful to edify men and heal relationships all over the world.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think one piece of conventional advice we hear a lot is “If you believe it you can achieve it”. I believe that statement needs a lot more context because it sounds so simple. But is belief truly that simple? If I merely “think” it…can I achieve it? I don’t think so. That’s not real life. Your thoughts have to manifest into action. Belief is a combination of two things: Imagination & Execution. Without imagination, you won’t be excited and energized enough to execute. Without execution, you will never manifest what you imagined. True belief is followed by action. If your belief doesn’t compel you to action then you have to question if you REALLY believe.
I think the biggest skill I learned in growing a business that I’m passionate about is follow-through and execution. As long as I keep following through and taking massive action, the skills I don’t have, I will develop. Why? Because human nature is to adapt and overcome. As long as I take action I will learn. Soon enough, my actions will meet an opportunity that will change my life FOREVER.
My advice to you. TAKE MASSIVE ACTION AND DON’T STOP.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
How To Win Friends & Influence People.
The reason why this book is so essential is because you can only get so far by yourself. Don’t get me wrong, you can get A LOT accomplished alone. But you will hit a ceiling eventually. Sometimes you have to accomplish a lot alone to build trust with people who will eventually join you on your journey later. When that time comes, you need to be able to convince people to jump on board. If you can’t do this, you will only go so far.
