Meet Joshua Handler

We recently connected with Joshua Handler and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Joshua, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?
I developed my ability to take risks by simply taking the plunge and putting myself out there. The first step – deciding to actually take the risk – is by far the hardest. When deciding to start my live virtual Q&A series, Picturehouse 441, with my business partner, I knew there were many risks involved including whether or not any filmmakers would be willing to join this public-facing series (my last one was private) and whether or not anyone would pay the admission price to attend. Luckily, we’ve had a great group of artists who have shared their stories with us and an ever-increasing number of attendees.

When I decided to take the risk of starting this business, I thought that the best bet I could place would be on myself. Seeing bets like these pay off over the years and lead to wild opportunities that I never would have had on a more risk-averse path led me to want to take more.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Picturehouse 441 is a live virtual Q&A series dedicated to promoting film literacy. Our Q&As are exclusively available live in order to give our filmmaker guests the space to be as candid as possible. This series was born out of an intense desire to provoke film-lovers to view great films of the past (we do feature Q&As on some newer films too that I think will move the medium forward) and to connect more closely to them. Our events are intimate and conversational, and we’ve been fortunate enough to feature some of the world’s greatest artists.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The best advice I have for those early in their journey is to be fearless and to bet on themselves. My ability to take risks, have no fear, and to believe in my own work has allowed me to succeed.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents provide the foundation upon which I stand now (and they continue to guide me). When I told them I wanted to attend film school, they never asked any questions and supported my path the entire way. Their unwavering support as well as the work ethic that they instilled in me guides me ever single day.
