We were lucky to catch up with Joshua Hanson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Joshua, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
One of the best ways I keep my creativity alive is by exploring the art and music around me. I try to dive into artists or genres I don’t normally listen to with regularity. Your art is an expression of the world around you. I find it helps keep my art fresh as well. So, if I am not experiencing different types of art/genres I feel like my creativity begins to feel stale.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a musician and producer in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. As an artist my main goal is to create music in which I can express my ideas and emotions honestly and hopefully be relatable to those listening. For the most part I have my own project named Lunar Reverb in which I write, produce, and promote all on my own as an indie artist. I have had the pleasure of playing some of the best artists and venues in the DFW area like the American Airlines Center. My songs “Purple Pistol”, “Peace of Mind”, “Save Me”, and the latest single “Midnight Tokin’ With You” have all been included on radio stations including major stations such as 91.7KXT and 97.1 The Eagle(before it shut down). I also have a new EP in the works named “Nocturnal Reflections” in which I have been super excited about working on.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities which will take you far in any field are detemination, friendliness/networking, and learning new skills. Determination to put your mind to a goal and see it though to the end is one of the most important qualities to build. You are going to have set backs. If you believe in your idea whole heartedly and have the determination to make it happen then these set backs will be nothing but funny stories to look back on in your future. The second quality is being friendly and networking. I cannot tell you how many gigs or opportunities I have gotten just by being friendly and networking with other artists and business owners. If you support other people then other people will support you. This is extremely important especially when starting out. Another quality you should always maintain is education whether that be school or just a new skill you develop on your own. Originally, I started as a musician who could only play a guitar. Back then I could only get gigs for guitar. I have since then developed on multiple instruments, learned to record and mix on multiple audio programs, a little bit of graphic design, and learned to promote and run social media accounts. Learning new skills opens doors to opportunities you didn’t know you would be looking for sometimes.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I’m a strong believer in being well rounded. It’s easy and kind of boring to only work on something you are good at. Our strength grows from our weaknesses. If you work on what you are not good at then you are raising the floor of your potential. Also, as I said previously you get more opportunities when are versed in many skills.
