We recently connected with Joshua McCarty and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Joshua, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I found my purpose through reflection and prayer. I spent 6 years across four different prisons in Georgia. Upon my release, I struggled financially and could not get a job that paid more than $12/hr. I knew I had to take care of my family and myself, I reflected on what I liked to do, what I would want to do and, something that would be lucrative. I prayed that The Good Lord showed me a way, or gave me an idea. To make a long story, longer, I eventually purchased a camera in hopes of starting a YouTube channel which ultimately opened a pathway for me to make commercials for top brands like Planet Fitness, Edible Arrangements, and Dow.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Joshua McCarty. I am a Professional Filmmaker in Georgia who specializes in commercials and promotional content for businesses. I own a Production Company named Nostalgia House and am proud to say we have worked with top brands like Planet Fitness, Dow, Edible Arrangements, and Reebok. Coming from the humblest of beginnings, from being homeless with my family to spending 6 years in prison, I would have never thought a camera would take me as far as it has. When I was first released from prison, I had a difficult time securing a job that paid livable wages. Due to my background, it was challenging to take care of my financial responsibilities. I went to college for two years but quickly realized I did not want to work 50 hours for someone’s organization I did not believe it. Through a lot of reflection and prayer, I was led to buy a camera which led me on the path to now, operating my own production company. Being a solopreneur allows me to do something I enjoy and also grants me the freedom to take care of my financial obligations. It is amazing what people can do when their back is against the wall but their mind is free.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think about where I have come from often. It gives me motivation to know I can overcome future obstacles but it also allows me to stay humble and empathetic. Through all of my hardships, resilience, faith and optimism kept me going. The more you make it through, the more you CAN make it through. So now, anytime I go through something challenging in life, I ask myself, “have you been through anything worse than this?”, and if the answer is “yes”, then I know I can make it through the current issue as well. The advice I would give to anyone is to understand you are strong and that God wants to give you the best. He does not want you to struggle. Anything you are going through now is not about the current situation, it is just to prepare you for what you need to become.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
Outside of The Bible, the most influential book I ever laid my eyes upon is “Confessions” by St. Augustine. I try to read that book once per year and every time I read it, it makes me fall in love with God more and also makes me respect people more. St. Augustine shows what it is like to be a faulty human being and that no matter how confused we get on our journey, God loves us and will always shine a light to guide our paths.
