Meet Joshua Onimus

We were lucky to catch up with Joshua Onimus recently and have shared our conversation below.

Joshua, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I discovered a passion for film and the technical knowledge behind the mechanisms that occur behind the scenes at a very early age. A friend of mind let me borrow the Star Wars Trilogy in grade school and I think that really opened my mind to the possibilities that film contained. I’d take Star Wars toys and I’d film their individual motions one frame at a time until it resembled something called stop motion animation. They weren’t particularly good but that was certainly the launch point for my interest in filmmaking.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I work on a variety of film projects in the State of Florida. Most of them in the South Florida area. My most proud projects typically came when working in the retro gaming hobby. I recently wrapped up a new film that I was apart of titled ‘Token Taverns’. ‘Token Taverns’ is a documentary exploring the growth of arcade bars and what this growing trend is all about. “Token Taverns” centers on 3 arcade bars and their owners over 2 years as they try to thrive and survive through a global pandemic. Myself and Director Bob Rose premiered it on April 30th at the 2023 Sunscreen Film Festival in St. Petersburg, Florida. We managed to sell out every seat and got a standing ovation in response. It was quite humbling. Video game icon, Billy Mitchell was on hand to meet and greet fans at the screening. I really think It turned out better then any of us could have imagined.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think having the ability to multi-task is important. You absolutely will be tasked to have more to handle in less then ideal time. Time management is key. I think that also taking yourself and your hobbies outside your comfort zone can lead to happy accidents. That was sort of how I ended up working on Token Taverns. The Director and I were both at the same place at the right time. I had to put myself out there. I think anyone chasing any sort of dream should be conscious of these things. It will greatly help along the way.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’d love to work with others who create content independently but perhaps share the same sense of hobbies that I cover. Doing any sort of work with someone like James Rolfe (Angry Video Game Nerd) or Pat Contri (Pat the NES Punk) would be most gratifying. As far as the material I create and what creators influenced me most, I believe if I worked with either of them, I’d feel like I have made it haha
