Meet Joshua Pfister

 

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joshua Pfister a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Joshua, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

Simple, because my failures are unique to me and have given me the knowledge needed to be more effective in decision making, at least in my story. I take paths less traveled and choose for myself when to take that next step. I am the only one in this room that looks like me because no one has forced me into failure or has given me success. I can gain all the knowledge, tips, tricks and advice in the world. But until they’ve been implemented into a plan and I make things happen, I simply just have cloud files. I can’t sit around and worry about what others ideal success looks like, or worry about the bitter taste from imposters syndrome. I continue to be educated, bold, different and creative. I take chances necessary when presented with opportunities and I am not afraid of failure or judgement. Those have been the most effective tools for turning the pages in my story.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am an Ohio native with 15 years of professional tattooing experience and a proud father of two amazing boys. I have a passion for all things art, cooking, music, design and creating in general. Although I specialize in black and grey realism tattoos, Im always striving to be more of a well rounded artist. I recently switched gears in my career and decided it was time to build a future for myself and my children. The last we spoke I was in the beginning stages of constructing a newly built tattoo studio/bed&breakfast. One year later with many permits, inspections and obstacles, I am proud to say that my doors are officially open.

I had a vision for encompassing a countryside tattoo environment with ways to ease those stressors that tattoos create for us. Of course we’re excited to have kickass artwork on us, but that doesn’t always stop the mind over matter struggle we get when it comes to physical pain. So that’s where I came up with the idea of calming therapy practices integrated into the tattooing process. I want to dive deeper into the meaning of relaxation through art and the impact it can have on our bodies when implemented in new and creative ways. Getting a tattoo can be a therapeutic experience in itself, but why not put more truth behind that. Welcome to The Nova Social.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

As mentioned previously, be bold, take chances and don’t be afraid of failure. The decision I made to create something so unique and different was followed by a lot of overwhelming months and hard to reach milestones. It really is all about the celebration of individualism. Be proud of yourself throughout the journey. Stay motivated, be patient and give yourself grace, it’ll all be worth it in the end.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?

The past 15 years of being in the tattoo industry, I have seen all walks of life. I am introducing this new tattoo experience to cater to them all. I want to help my clients decompress in more of a therapeutic atmosphere before their tattoos and feel that sense of ease with the nerves that come along with the tattooing process. Ideal for the workaholics that don’t know how to relax or those who want to feel like they’re at an all inclusive tattoo resort. Come one, come all!
