We were lucky to catch up with Joshua Sauceda recently and have shared our conversation below.
Joshua, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I spend the majority of my time around other creative energies. Traditional artists, digital artists, music producers, audio engineers, technologists, media directors and visual designers make up the surplus of my inspiration as of lately. Mostly fueled by mediums like photography and filmmaking, being exposed to creativity outside of my own realm over the last few years has led to an abundance of personal and professional evolution. Due to the nature of my work, familiarization around pop-culture, music, and fashion comes natural to me and keeps me sharp. I consider myself a traditionalist despite living in a very digital landscape and often analyze the more traditional cinematic and documental works of greats like Stanley Kubrick, Quentin Tarantino, and Martin Scorsese to build a healthy foundation for my visual work. My accolades in visual curation and editorial have been guided by my life-long transition of merely existing as an observer to thriving as a participant in the creative industry. I wouldn’t be as active if I weren’t brave enough to constantly experiment, so bravery is a big part of keeping my creativity alive.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
At heart, I am a storyteller, passionate about sharing socially and culturally progressive narratives around art, culture, technology and music. My trade is in photography and cinematography which is accented by an additional background in writing and traditional art. My interests span not just NYC, but the globe and my desire to work on stunning creative campaigns while documenting the world has grown insatiably. Community building has become a pillar in my success and I have been consumed with consistently growing a network to co-create with my peers and teammates, while building resources. Much of what I am keen on accomplishing will be fulfilled through my latest accomplishment in editorial, ARCHIV3. ARCHIV3 is a NYC based media company inclusive of physical and digital print that encompasses art and technology stories which opens up a plethora of opportunities for us to support artists while building a valuable platform. I’m most excited about expanding the magazine into a media company over the next few quarters which will open up a lot of new doors for not just the team but our entire roster of collaborators and features.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Assessing failures, being brave enough to experiment with new ideas, and being strategic with my time has been the latest qualities I’ve adapted to my work ethic. I would recommend everyone take time out of their day to think in retrospect and build a strategy to obtain your short term and long term goals. Lean on others you look up to for advice, and get use to humility on the taxing but rewarding journey of being a creative,
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
A major initiative at ARCHIV3 is growing the platform and being able to deliver more content to our audience on a daily basis. We are currently on the lookout for contributors such as writers, photographers and filmmakers. As we build out our ecosystem, we want to create a meaningful pond of resources, connections and opportunities for aspiring storytellers.
