Meet Joshua Sowah

We were lucky to catch up with Joshua Sowah recently and have shared our conversation below.

Joshua, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

Building confidence and self-esteem in the pest control field or any industry really, can take time, experience and dedication. The more you know about the various pests, how to handle treatments, and how to approach customers, the more confident you feel in your ability to solve problems over time. Every successful job you complete, whether it’s eradicating a tough infestation or creating an effective prevention plan, boosts your confidence. As you overcome challenges and see results, you naturally develop a stronger sense of self-assurance.
Hearing from satisfied customers who appreciate your work can have a huge impact on your self-esteem. It’s a reminder that you’re providing real value and making a difference.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m the director of a pest control business called The General Pest Co. This year will be my 11th year in the pest industry and roughly 3 years as a business owner. In the 11 years I have acquired a world of knowledge but also feel I have so much more to learn. It’s an industry that without a doubt teaches you something new everyday. whether that be on the tools or in the office. Professionally moving forward my focus is GROWTH! Growth in knowledge, growth in the business, growth in networking/relationships, growth in personal development, the list goes on. I want The General Pest Co to be some time in the near future the pest control business everyone can trust. It’s a business I have built on honesty, trust and pride in customer satisfaction and that is the DNA I want for it as long as it’s around.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, the three things that probably helped me the most would be.

* Willingness to learn – You’re never too knowledgeable to learn something new. A good piece of advice that I got from one of my previous bosses that has stuck with me was “the only dumb question is an un-asked question”. Never be too shy or prideful to ask a question to that may better your knowledge or further your understanding.

* Network – Get yourself out there and create relationships with people that will better you as a person/grow and challenge you in your field or industry. Here is where you will find mentors and also come across opportunities that can help grow you or your business.

*Morals – Have morals and stick by them. So often people will start morally correct and rapidly decline once figures get thrown around/competition get’s in the way. Stay honest and above reproach in all you do. Sometimes it may get you there slower but it will build you a more loyal customer base.

Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?

I feel like I could have multiple answers for this question haha. To be honest I think I’d probably continue to build the business for a good 5 or so years. That way I can leave something behind when I leave. With the other 5 years left i’d probably pack up and move to the Amalfi coast or country side Italy with my wife and enjoy all the fresh food, pasta and gelato known to man. My wife and I went to the Amalfi coast for our honeymoon so it has a special place in our hearts.
