We were lucky to catch up with Joshua Tovar recently and have shared our conversation below.
Joshua, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from my family, my roots, and, most importantly, my faith. Growing up, I saw how hard my parents worked to provide for us and to create opportunities for a better future, which shaped me. My true foundation is the Bible. It’s the rulebook for life. My identity, who I am, and the type of lifestyle I’m responsible for following, including my work ethic, comes from the instruction given by Jesus in the Bible. When you combine faith, family values, and a passion for what you do, it’s natural to give your best every single day.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Joshua Tovar, a Latin artist based in Miami from a Colombian family, and my project, JoshuaLife, is all about creating music that connects with people on a deep, emotional level. My journey as an artist has been shaped by my love for storytelling—whether it’s through lyrics, melodies, or live performances. What sets my music apart is its blend of romantic and playful vibes, infused with guitar-driven sounds and heartfelt narratives, all rooted in a desire to bring a message of hope and faith.
I’m also the founder and CEO of Life’s Bread Music LLC, a record label dedicated to restoring the identity of the youth, the dignity of women, and the presence of Jesus in LatinUrban music. For me, music is a platform to share values that matter—love, respect, and faith. Everything I create is inspired by my relationship with Jesus and the instruction found in the Bible. Through my work, I aim to use music not just as entertainment but as a way to inspire positive change.
One of the most exciting aspects of my journey has been seeing how my songs resonate with listeners worldwide. My track “HOCO en la U,” for example, tells the story of love and youthful spontaneity in a unique way. It’s deeply personal but also relatable, which is what I strive for with all my music.
My brand is all about authenticity. From the black-and-white aesthetic of my visuals to the unplugged guitar performances I share on social media, everything is designed to give people a genuine experience of who I am as an artist.
Above all, I want my music to reflect the beauty of God’s design and inspire others to see their worth through His eyes. Whether it’s a song that gets you dancing or one that makes you reflect, my goal is to create moments that stick with you. To anyone discovering my work for the first time—thank you for listening, and welcome to the journey.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, I’d say the three most impactful things in my journey have been faith, discipline, and storytelling.
Faith is the foundation of everything I do. It’s not just about believing in God but also believing in the vision He’s placed in my heart. My faith gives me clarity, purpose, and the strength to keep going even when things get tough. For anyone starting their journey, I’d say make time to cultivate your spiritual life. Knowing why you’re doing something and staying grounded in your values will carry you through challenges.
Discipline is what turns dreams into reality. Talent and passion are important, but without consistency and hard work, they won’t take you far. I learned this by committing to daily habits—whether it’s writing songs, practicing guitar, or working on my craft. To those just starting, find ways to build small, consistent routines. It’s the everyday effort that leads to long-term success.
As an artist, I’ve realized that it’s not just about making music—it’s about telling stories that people can connect with. Learning how to translate emotions and experiences into words and melodies has been a game-changer. For anyone developing this skill, I recommend staying curious about life and paying attention to the little details. Whether you’re writing, creating, or performing, authenticity is what makes your story powerful.
My advice for those early in their journey: Start by defining your “why.” Once you’re clear on that, build your habits around your goals, stay true to your values, and never stop learning. Remember, every step you take—no matter how small—brings you closer to your purpose.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was teaching me the value of faith and hard work. They showed me what it means to trust God in every season of life and to persevere no matter the obstacles. My mom and dad worked tirelessly to create a life of opportunity for our family, and they never let me forget where I come from or the importance of staying grounded in my values.
They also believed in my goals, reminding me that I was created with a purpose. Their encouragement has been a constant source of strength. They’ve always been my biggest cheerleaders, and that kind of love and support is something I’ll carry with me forever.
