Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Josiah Hanson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Josiah, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I began to overcome imposter syndrome by simply spending more time in the craft—allowing experience to build confidence. I made a point to keep learning, seeking out new techniques and refining my skills. Hearing positive feedback from customers at markets helped affirm the value of our work, and connecting with peers in the industry reminded me that many of us wrestle with the same doubts. Over time, those things helped shift my focus from self-doubt to growth and purpose.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hanson Leather Co is a small-batch leather goods brand rooted in Scandinavian-inspired minimalism. We design timeless bags and accessories using traditional craftsmanship and intentional design. Every piece is made to last and created for those who value simplicity, quality, and living with less—but better. This summer, we introduced our newest design: the Synnøve. Crafted from rich, vegetable-tanned leather, it’s more than just a tote—it’s a standout piece. With its distinctive shape and thoughtful details, it’s designed to carry your essentials in style, whether you’re navigating city streets or wandering your favorite market. Durable, refined, and effortlessly elegant, the Synnøve is made to move with you. And while this beauty settles into the world, we’re already dreaming up our next piece—our very first true handbag.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
One of the biggest shifts for us came when we started setting long-term goals—dreams, really—and then structuring our weeks in a way that moved us toward them. That simple practice helped turn our hobby into a real business. Along the way, we also had to learn the importance of knowing our value. Pricing was one of the hardest things to get right at first, but understanding what we needed to charge—and having the confidence to stand by it—was crucial. Another key turning point was finding our style and voice. Once we realized we wanted to focus on Scandinavian design and women’s handbags, everything clicked into place. It gave us clarity, excitement, and a strong sense of direction.
