Meet Josiah Winston

We were lucky to catch up with Josiah Winston recently and have shared our conversation below.

Josiah, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

I’ve learned from influential African Americans who have inspired me, whether it be preachers such as Martin Luther King Jr. or actors like myself such as Denzel Washington, Michael B. Jordan, or the late Chadwick Boseman, that the way to be successful and effective in a world that can and does oppress those who look like you, is with wisdom, knowledge and work ethic. They are three things that no one can take away from you, no matter the situation, producing good works that can make a lasting impact on the world itself. Living and working in a predominantly white space has allowed me to hold on to these ideals and continue to grow as an artist.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Hello! My name is Josiah Winston, and I am an Actor, Writer, and Producer along with other professions I am pursuing within that realm! Every day I am given the blessing to produce and showcase art, something that is within my very soul, and something I am forever thankful to do, especially in such a professional light. Alongside my Co-Writer and Producer, Finley O’Hara, as well as Directors Kelsey Christian and Scott Haynes, we have finished filming our short film, “dread.” which tackles the emotions that high school students, such as myself, experience when having to face off against the idea of school shootings. More information for viewing will be posted on our Instagram!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Faith, Creativity, and Determination. I believe that each of these three work off each other, allowing for a well rounded creative, as well as a person. Without these three qualities, I couldn’t see myself moving anywhere in the acting industry let alone life. My advice to those who are starting out and are early in whatever facet they are walking through would be to find these three qualities, and make them habits. To engage with each in a way where your life effectively utilizes each quality. When you get into situations where you feel down, or when you’re in a tight spot (which you will be) then you can utilize these qualities to persevere, and walk out better than before.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

Yes, definitely! I think the kinds of people worth collaborating with are those who promote creativity. Someone who freely and openly bounces off ideas with their teammates is a person who is able to produce phenomenal results. As I continue to write more and more scripts and potentially get them produced, someone with fresh and creative ideas will always be at the forefront of my mind. If you would at all like to connect with me, you can via my Instagram, or my email, both of which are on my socials!
