We recently connected with Josie Zlobin and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Josie, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Years ago in college, I had an English teacher have us watch the TED Talk by Amy Cuddy called “Fake it Till You Make it.” Shortly after watching it I interviewed for my first Supervisor position at work and nailed it using her techniques. Now, almost 10 years later I refer to that video when imposter syndrome starts to sneak up on me.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Josie Zlobin and my husband Steve Zlobin and I own Glow Flow Denver. We created a place where you can get all your glow products and accessories for Raves, concerts, birthday parties, roller rinks and so much more. We recently had to close our Brick and Mortar store and sell solely online now. Our goal has always been to connect with our customers and to give them the best service possible. Moving solely to e-commerce has changed that and has us back at the drawing board as we pivot into this transition. I was fortunate enough to compete on season 12 ofThe Blox which is the biggest competition show for Entrepreneurs. I was able to connect with so many like minded people, the competition didn’t matter anymore. Steve and I decided to move onto The Blox graduate school, where we were able to learn even more about modern day business. Even though closing the Brick and Mortar location was tough, The Blox had given us the tools to pivot easily.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The quality we focus on the most is customer service. We teach our team members to see every customer walk in our doors with a greeting. Our goal is to teach customers, what they are looking at, how to use it and then give them ideas of when to use the products. I have customers regularly come up to me and thank me for the level of customer service we provide. We also ensure to offer safe UV reactive makeup after hearing that customers were getting chemical burns from makeup they buy off Amazon and from one of our biggest local competitors. Our goal opening was to give people a place to buy all their glow items in one place and we test everything so we can tell our customers all the ins and outs of each item. Being transparent about the quality is how we have repeat customers.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
Honestly The Blox community has been the most helpful in overcoming our challenges. They have been our support team since January. Talking to others that have gone through or are going through similar situations we were dealing with has been the most impactful. There are experts in every aspect of business in this community and every time I reach out for guidance there are numerous people offering advice. They kept my drive going when I didn’t know how to pivot.
