Meet Jovan Cullins

We were lucky to catch up with Jovan Cullins recently and have shared our conversation below.

Jovan, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

By finding inspiration in everything around me, taking the smallest thing and trying to see what other ways and view points make it unique. Also just a strong sense of wanting to be a better version of myself.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m a NYC based photographer and creative. Photography started out as a hobby for me just to express how I view the world and show my version of beauty in the madness of New York City. Overtime it morphed into something I never thought possible open so many doors and exposed me to things that I never dreamed was possible.

My Photography style consists of lifestyle Portraiture and Street Photography. They’re both special in their own way one showcases people in a light they’ve probably never seen themselves in and the other freezes time basically immortalizing a candid moment.

My long term goal is to have a multimedia company in which creatives of all types can come and hone in on their craft while networking with other individuals who have the same passion and similar interest. I feel spaces like these are important because a lot of people are talented in what they do but lack the genuine embrace of a community and often times that can make or break someone’s creative spirt.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

•Always know what you want.
I feel like this is easier said than done but having a clear vision helps when things seem uncertain.

•Don’t be afraid to pivot
Sometimes things are not going to go the EXACT way you planned it often it’s for a reason.

•Slow motion is still motion
Take your time don’t let anyone or anything rush your process. Buts still be mindful that producing something and later improving on it is better than not producing anything at all.

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?

I feel like being more well rounded in a few effective areas will prove more beneficial in the long run. Often times trying to focus in on one thing for a long amount of time can become a self hinderance it’s like fishing, the wider you cast a net the better your chances of making a catch.
