Meet Joy Backlas-cruz

We were lucky to catch up with Joy Backlas-cruz recently and have shared our conversation below.

Joy, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

All my life, I had been preparing to be a physician. I attended a medical high school in Houston, and then an 8-year undergraduate to medical school program in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, being a doctor seemed to be everyone else’s dream for me, but it wasn’t my own. It seemed my only calling was to be an involved mother and the long, time and labor intensive road of undergrad, medical school, residency, fellowship, and practice seemed to leave little time in my young adult life to spend with my future children. By my sophomore year of college, this made me very depressed. When we are told our entire lives that our natural desires, like finding love and being mothers, should be put on hold until after we finish school and establish ourselves in our competitive careers, it is no wonder that young women are so anxious and depressed. The culture encourages us to live in a way that counters biology. When I withdrew from medical school, I knew that if my mission was to bring children into this world, I would fight tooth and nail for their freedoms, safety, agency, and liberty. My one true purpose on this earth is to be a contributing force in saving a broken culture so that my future children have the opportunity to live their best possible lives. Today, I am engaged to the love of my life and spend every day writing about and discussing culture, politics, religions, and economics, fighting to revitalize the spirit of not only the United States of America, but the West.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

With Joy Backlas-Cruz Media, I am active on X, Instagram, TikTok, and Youtube discussing politics, culture, economics, and thought structures. I explain deeper meanings behind current events and their relevance to you. As a biologist by training, much of my approach to analyzing history and anthropology is through a biological lens; I often refer to culture as an organism. We are living in the most culturally dynamic period in human history. There is never a dull moment in the news cycle and I am so grateful to be alive in the most exciting period of human evolution. My long-form content is soon to be regular on Youtube and X. All of these topics will be discussed at length and in depth in relation to current events. Join me @joybacklascruz on any platform, I’d love to see you there!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Oddly enough, my knowledge of biology, chemistry, and psychology from my medical training is what best defines my brand. Observing and analyzing politics and culture from a biological angle gives me a unique perspective that allowed me to carve a specialized niche for myself. The very best method of achieving success in your field is carving your own niche. What can you uniquely offer?

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

The biggest obstacles to growing my brand and overcoming challenges are my own fears and insecurities. Since the beginning of my journey, my fiance has been the most encouraging driving force that pushes me to keep going and reminds me that my purpose is so much bigger than myself. He believed in me when no one else did and has helped me overcome my own psyche.
