We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joy Gasaway a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Joy, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?
My generosity comes from seeing a need and filling a need without strings attached. I’ve experienced some good help and I’ve experienced some conditional help and more often than not, the conditional help puts a strain on any friendship or relationship being built.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the founder of an international event called “WeOnFyre Cypher” this event is a hub for inexperienced, experienced, or individuals willing to learn within the dance community. The WeOnFyre Cypher is an event Hosted by my crew FyreNation Crew for the dance community. I originally had the idea in 2014 but finally began making this idea a reality in 2020 with the help of my husband Anthony “Fyrefli” Gasaway. the event that I wanted to host for the community is a safe, unbiased, and encouraging environment to dance in for a dancer of any level. We allow people the option to come and enjoy, network, or participate. So far we have had 23 successful events here in the USA and 2 successful WeOnFyre Cypher events in Africa, the first being Uganda in September 24th, 2022 and the second being Tanzania February 25th, 2023 The third event will take place this month July 22, 2023
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
3 qualities and skills I belive were most impactful are persistence, discernment, and flexibility. Some advice I would give to people early in their journey is to remember that anyone could be a connection to build your dream and every closed door does not mean failure.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My husband Anthony “Fyrefli” Gasaway has been very instrumental in helping me polish my existing skills and opening my eyes to new ones that I did not know I could handle effectively. He has been a very adamant teacher and a very caring figure in my life since we met in 2020. He heard of my dreams and pushes me every day to reach them. He is also the first person to invest into my business brand “Baruk Blessing” where I sell handmade accessories and other items.
