Meet Joy Houston

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joy Houston. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Joy , we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?

My generosity comes from a deep sense of gratitude for the blessings God has given me and the people He’s placed in my life to guide and support me. I believe that success isn’t just about what you achieve—it’s about how you honor God by using your gifts to uplift others. Whether it’s through mentorship, sharing knowledge, or giving back to the community, I see generosity as a reflection of God’s love and a way to create a ripple effect of positivity and empowerment. It’s my way of living with purpose and leaving an impact beyond myself..

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m Joy Houston, a licensed cosmetologist and entrepreneur passionate about creating luxury hair experiences for women. My brand specializes in high-quality, personalized styles like luxury sew-ins and braids, designed to leave my clients feeling confident and beautiful.
What sets my brand apart is my dedication to professionalism, creativity, and a genuine care for each client. Beyond styling, I’m excited to expand through The Braiding Method, a program where I teach aspiring stylists the art of braiding alongside business and branding strategies.
My mission is to inspire others to follow their passions while making a lasting impact in the beauty industry.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Patience, marketing, and adaptability have been the most impactful qualities in my journey. Patience helped me stay grounded as I built my business step by step, especially during slower seasons. Marketing allowed me to effectively share my work and attract the right clients, and adaptability ensured I could stay ahead in an ever-changing industry.

Don’t give up. It starts slow, but with time and consistency, things will pick up. Stay educated—you’re always a student in this industry. New styles come out every year, and some trends even make a comeback from the past. Embrace lifelong learning, and don’t be afraid to invest in yourself and your craft.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

The two people who have been most helpful in my journey are my mom and my friend Candice.

My mom, a licensed barber and professional braider, has been a huge influence on my life and career. She taught me how to braid at just five years old and made sure I pursued formal education by attending hair school. Beyond technical skills, she also taught me how to brand myself and approach my career with intention and focus.

Candice, a talented hairstylist who I’ve worked with for over 10 years, has been like a big sister to me. She has a knack for staying connected to everyone and everything in the industry, which has kept me inspired and motivated. Candice also has an incredible eye for style and emphasizes the importance of looking presentable every day at work. Her advice has boosted my confidence, and now I find myself always on the hunt for new work attire!
