Meet Joy Tutu-brempong

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Joy Tutu-brempong. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Joy below.

Joy, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

When I landed my gig as a marketing designer at a fintech company, I was pumped but also pretty nervous. My first big project was a campaign for a new product feature, and I was all set to crush it. But when I showed my designs, they didn’t quite hit the spot, and I could tell my team wasn’t impressed. It was a tough moment, and I felt like I was really up against it.

Instead of letting it get to me, I took a step back and did what I always do when I’m feeling stuck: I took a few minutes to breathe, figured out what wasn’t working, and planned out what I could fix quickly. I dove into some research, checked out the latest trends, and looked at user feedback more closely.

With a fresh perspective, I revamped the campaign with a focus on real stories and connecting with people. When we rolled it out, it hit the mark and even exceeded our goals. It felt amazing to see it all come together, and it was a big reminder that staying calm and taking things step by step really pays off.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m a brand and marketing designer who’s got a serious passion for brand design and illustration. Right now, I’m diving headfirst into the marketing realm because I believe that to master branding, you need to be well-versed in all its facets. So, while I’m rocking the marketing side of things, I’m also feeding my love for design and illustration on the side.

What really gets me excited is the creative freedom I get to play with. I love blending bold design with strategic thinking to create campaigns that don’t just look awesome but also hit the mark with audiences. It’s like solving a creative puzzle where every piece needs to fit perfectly to make the big picture pop.

Outside of work, I’m running a podcast that mixes humor with compelling storytelling. Think of it as a fun escape where I get to dive into fascinating narratives and connect with folks who share a love for movies and great stories. It’s been a blast seeing it grow and getting to experiment with new content ideas.

Right now, I’m juggling a major product launch at work and gearing up for some exciting new podcast episodes with special guests. It’s a whirlwind, but I thrive on the hustle and love keeping things moving forward. So, stick around there’s plenty more to come, and I can’t wait to share the ride with you!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, there are three big things that really made a difference for me: adaptability, creativity, and a love for learning. Being adaptable has helped me roll with the punches and adjust to whatever comes my way, whether it’s a new trend or an unexpected challenge.

Creativity has been huge, too. It’s not just about whipping up cool designs; it’s also about finding smart solutions to problems. That knack for coming up with fresh ideas has really helped me stand out and tackle tough spots.

And let’s not forget continuous learning. The design and marketing scenes are always changing, so staying up-to-date with the latest trends and tools has been key to keeping my edge.

For anyone just starting out, here’s my advice: be open to change, keep pushing your creative limits, and always stay curious. Adaptability will help you handle whatever comes your way, creativity will set you apart, and a love for learning will keep you sharp. Keep moving forward and let your passion drive you!

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

Looking back, Emmanuel Dankyi, Eldad Nutakor, and Benjamin Arthur have been absolutely crucial in my journey. They were the ones who gave me my first real breakout into brand design, taking a chance on me when I was just starting out. Their guidance has been incredible they’ve not only shared their expertise but also provided the encouragement I needed to build my skills and confidence. Each of them played a big role in helping me navigate the early stages of my career, and their support has made all the difference in my growth and success.
