Meet Joy Washington

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joy Washington . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Joy, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

As a young queer Black woman navigating diverse environments, I have experienced both blessings and challenges that have contributed to my lifelong learning journey.

Before discovering my true passion and finding a supportive community in the media industry, I often found myself invited as a photographer to spaces where I was frequently the only Black person or queer woman present.

I intentionally seek out opportunities in spaces typically overlooked by people of color, embracing a unique approach to my work.

Many people initially underestimate my professional capabilities, mistaking me for an event staff member / cleaning staff rather than a businesswoman or photographer until I reveal my equipment.

I have often faced quick judgments based on my appearance, and my non-feminine presentation has sometimes exacerbated these perceptions; however, conversations have often shifted the energy in the room once my intelligence becomes apparent.

Although these experiences have been extremely uncomfortable, they have ultimately strengthened my resolve and shaped my identity as a successful businesswoman, instilling in me the belief that I can thrive in any environment.

I no longer concern myself with others’ judgments; I am confident in my identity, even if many around me are not.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I currently hold positions as a Communications Manager, Photojournalist, and Content Producer, which has been a rewarding journey since my return home.

My success has been greatly influenced by the supportive environment and the high intelligence of the people around me, particularly Susan Smallwood, CEO of grandiosity events, who gave me a chance when I needed it the most.

Over the years, my photography skills have significantly improved, leading to opportunities like my first corporate brand photoshoot and continued success with social media clients and CF Financial.

Working part-time at Barrie School in Maryland has not only provided a safe space but also brought about personal growth and support from colleagues like Stephanie and Wayne Clark Athletics.

Recently had the opportunity to work with Kelsey Nelson, who has introduced me to new possibilities, including participating in an event at the White House for Black Women in Sports Day.

I am proud to join the Minor Football League as the photographer under the leadership of Dr. Richard.

My company has also received support from Spotlight DMV, Miles Ahead Tennis, Be You Boat Tours, Cheyney University Washington DC Metro Area Alumni Chapter, and The Black Opulence Experience.

Additionally, I am thrilled to become a member of the Washington Association of Black Journalists and to work as a photographer alongside Aisha Braveboy, the PG State Attorney.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

My diverse experiences in various job environments, including schools, security, and customer service, have significantly shaped my current thriving mindset.

The skills I acquired in my previous roles are instrumental in my business endeavors today, providing me with insights into effective business operations, pitfalls to avoid, and the importance of emotional intelligence, which I developed early on due to my interactions with others.

I have also learned valuable lessons about the joys and challenges of business, as well as the necessity of organization.

I encourage you to embrace the opportunity to start anew without fear or shame; I once hesitated until I recognized that a fresh beginning was essential for aligning with my true path.

Seek environments where you are valued and respected, rather than merely tolerated or exploited.

Establishing boundaries is crucial, as individuals will only act within the limits you set. It is important to teach others how to treat you and to assertively say no when necessary.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?

My photography skills have experienced significant growth over time.

I am grateful for the support I received at the beginning of my media journey, but I have since moved on to more beneficial environments that have allowed me to truly develop my skills and explore various aspects of media, including broadcasting, podcasting, digital marketing, real estate photography, food photography, communications, PR, editing, and content production.
