We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joyce Caraway a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Joyce, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I found my purpose through a combination of lived experience and listening closely to what kept pulling at me. Growing up, I learned early how much environment, access, and encouragement can shape a child’s confidence and future. Education became a safe place for me, and literacy became a way to understand the world and find my voice.
As I became an educator, that sense of purpose grew stronger. I saw students who reminded me of myself. Students who were capable, curious, and full of potential, yet needing more time, attention, and belief than traditional systems could always provide. Over the years, I realized that my purpose wasn’t just to teach within a classroom, but to create spaces where children feel seen, supported, and empowered to grow.
Building Joybird’s Leadership Academy brought everything together. My background in education, my passion for literacy, my personal experiences, and my desire to give children what I once needed. Purpose, for me, didn’t arrive all at once. It revealed itself through service, reflection, and the courage to build something meaningful even when the path felt uncertain.
Now, my purpose is clear: to create learning environments rooted in care and opportunity. Overall, helping children see that their story matters and their future is worth investing in.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m an educator, children’s book author, and the founder of Joybird’s Leadership Academy, a literacy-centered microschool based in the DFW area. At my core, I’m someone who believes deeply in the power of education. Education can change how children see themselves and what they believe is possible.
Professionally, I’ve spent years as a public school teacher, working closely with students and families from all walks of life. That experience shaped everything I’m building now. What excites me most about Joybird’s Leadership Academy is that it allows learning to be personal again. Small class sizes, strong relationships, and literacy at the center of everything we do. We’re not rushing kids through content, we’re helping them build a strong foundation and a sense of ownership over their learning.
Alongside the school, I create children’s books and learning resources through Joybird’s Treehouse. These books are an extension of the same mission: strengthening literacy, representation, and confidence in children. Sharing stories at community events, schools, and libraries has been one of the most meaningful parts of this journey. It allows me to connect with families long before a classroom even opens.
Right now, Joybird’s Leadership Academy is in its prelaunch phase, which is an exciting season of building, listening, and growing community support. I’m focused on curriculum development, family engagement, and spreading awareness through events and literacy-centered experiences. What I want people to know most about my brand is that it’s rooted in passion. Everything I create, whether a book or a school, is built with intention and heart.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three things have been most impactful in my journey: resilience, clarity of purpose, and a deep understanding of people.
Resilience has been essential. Building something meaningful while balancing teaching, motherhood, and personal responsibility requires learning how to keep going even when progress feels slow or resources feel limited. My advice to those early in their journey is to expect seasons of uncertainty and not interpret them as failure. Consistency matters more than speed. Keep showing up, even in small ways.
Clarity of purpose has guided every decision I’ve made. Knowing why I started has helped me stay grounded when opportunities, distractions, or doubts arise. For those just beginning, I encourage you to spend time defining your “why” before focusing on growth. Write it down. Revisit it often. Let it shape what you say yes to and what you let go of.
Finally, understanding people has been critical. Whether you’re serving families, customers, or a community, listening matters. My background as an educator taught me how to observe, ask questions, and respond with empathy. Early on, focus on learning from the people you serve. Pay attention to what they need, not just what you want to offer.
Together, these skills create a strong foundation. Growth comes from patience, purpose, and staying deeply connected to the people your work is meant to serve.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Yes, I am always open to thoughtful partnerships and collaborations that align with the mission of Joybird’s Leadership Academy. I’m especially interested in connecting with educators, literacy advocates, authors, creatives, and community organizations who care deeply about meaningful learning experiences. In addition to, I’m also open to collaborating with mentors, nonprofit leaders, and community partners who support families and children impacted by systemic barriers.
Whether it’s co-hosting an event, developing learning resources, or creating content that uplifts families and children, I believe collaboration strengthens both the work and the people behind it.
