Meet Joyce (Jiao) Jiao

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joyce (Jiao) Jiao. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Joyce (Jiao), thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

Growing up in an East Asian household with strict, high-standard parents, overcoming imposter syndrome became a significant part of my life. If you’re struggling with it, here’s a piece of advice: remember that it’s very dangerous and unhealthy to sink into a “toxic perfectionist” mindset.

In other words, don’t focus on factors you can’t control. It’s alright to have imperfections in your work. Don’t dwell on the past; instead, show the world your accomplishments and enjoy the sense of achievement you deserve. Then, make improvements next time. Don’t give up, but always focus on self-improvement.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Hi there! My name is Jiao Jiao. Yes, my first and last names are pronounced the same. But you can just call me Joyce. I started my life in the States as an international student studying Architecture Design and Film at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago back in 2016. Later, I moved to Los Angeles to continue my education at Gnomon – School of Visual Effects, focusing on real-time environment art. This field is applied in various industries, including video games, virtual production in films, and architectural visualization/staging.

I’ve been a loyal fan of real-time art and architectural visualization for years, and now I’m also a professional in the field. One major reason I love this gig is because it allows you to visualize ideas and concepts almost immediately. It’s a cool blend of technology and art.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Self-learning, critical thinking, and empathy are three crucial skills that have helped me a lot throughout my life. These qualities complement each other perfectly.

First off, it’s important to ask questions when you need help. However, the ability to learn on your own is key because it allows you to progress without always needing someone to hold your hand.
Thus it becomes the reason why “critical thinking” is an important quality or let’s say the skill we need to have. As it enhances the ability of our decision-making. Leading to better outcomes in both personal and professional aspects of our lives.

But hey, don’t forget to be as empathetic as possible all the time. Be kind to others. and make good, true friends. Just a while ago, my friend got me a new job! How wonderful is that!

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

When I say “who,” I don’t want to narrow it down to just one person. Instead, I’d like to express my gratitude to a special group of people: my mother, my uncle, my teachers, my friends, and everyone who has shown me kindness and supported me throughout my journey. These amazing individuals have been there for me, helping me grow and succeed in so many ways. Their support and encouragement have made a huge difference in my life, and I truly appreciate each and every one of them.
