We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Joyce Logan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Joyce below.
Joyce, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My humble beginnings, I faced a few obstacles and had to work hard for most of my achievements. I learned valuable lessons from my parent’s life challenges, mother’s strong work ethic and morals. My strength comes from embracing challenges and constantly seeking personal growth. Always, pushing myself outside of my comfort zone, I learned that I could overcome any obstacles that come my way. I surrounded myself with educated, well-rounded, loving families, and educators who inspired and motivated me along the way. With their support, along with my own determination, proved that nothing is impossible.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I spent most of life in Texas but was originally born and raised in Ohio. My heartfelt compassion for others began at a young age. I earned a BS degree at The Ohio State University and began my career in Social Work.
I spent several years in Business Development before Ruby Care became my vision, which was inspired during the time I spent caring for my mother-in-law Ruby and struggling to find resources to fit within the budget and needs of my mother and stepdad in 2011 who both were diagnosed with dementia. Both situations inspired me to learn everything about senior living so I could be a resource for seniors and families. Now I enjoy helping seniors and their families navigate the complicated choices they face when deciding their future living plans. I’m currently a Certified Senior Advisor, Certified Dementia Practitioner as well as a Board Member of DFW chapter of the National Placement Refferal Allicance and Dallas Area Parkinson’s Society.
Ruby Care Senior Living Advisors was founded in 2016. Now through our business, “Ruby Care” team and I are advocates for seniors and their families in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. We have 9 team members. Collectively, we have 150 years’ experience in senior living. Many of our advisors are Certified Senior Advisors, Certified Dementia Practitioner, have worked in hospice, home health, home care, communities etc. and have had personal experience from their own families. We all truly love what we do and have the same passion and drive, we all want to make it difference for the families we guide. It truly is our ministry.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Throughout my past careers, I’ve always been more of a listener than a talker. Why? Because I firmly believe that listening is the key to building trust and establishing strong relationships with clients. By truly hearing their needs and concerns, I can find effective solutions that leave them satisfied and happy.
Good customer service is treating people with respect. No matter who they are or what their situation may be, every individual deserves to be treated with dignity and kindness. This not only creates a positive experience for the customer but also helps foster a sense of loyalty towards our brand or company I represent.
Last but certainly not least is my commitment to offering the best service possible. Not only does this mean timely communication but continuously expanding my knowledge base and staying up to date with industry trends and advancements. By investing in my own growth, I can confidently provide customers with accurate information, valuable insights, and top-notch assistance.
For people early in their journey, It’s all about continuous development and improvement. Take the time to learn from others who have been in similar situations or seek guidance from mentors who can offer valuable insights. Embrace opportunities for growth, whether it’s through attending workshops, reading industry publications, or networking with like-minded individuals.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities, or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I have been fortunate to have a strong support system in place. My team of senior living advisors, networking opportunities, educators, trusted colleagues, training opportunities, and affiliated associations have all played a crucial role in my personal and professional development.
Having a team of advisors who are experienced and knowledgeable in their respective fields has been invaluable. They offer different solutions and perspectives.
Networking opportunities have also been instrumental in my growth. Connecting with like-minded individuals has allowed me to expand my horizons, learn from others’ experiences, and forge meaningful relationships. Through networking events and platforms, I have gained valuable insights that have contributed to my success.
Trusted colleagues have been another source of support. Collaborating with individuals who share similar goals and values has not only provided me with valuable feedback but also motivated me to push myself further.
Training opportunities offered by various organizations have been instrumental in honing my skills. Whether it’s attending volunteering, workshops or participating in webinars, these learning experiences have equipped me with the latest industry trends and best practices. The knowledge gained through training has given me a competitive edge while navigating challenges.
Lastly, being affiliated with associations related to my field has proven beneficial. These associations provide access to resources, industry updates, mentorship programs, and networking events tailored specifically for professionals like myself. Being part of such communities has allowed me to stay connected with industry trends while fostering relationships with peers who understand the unique challenges we face.
