We were lucky to catch up with Joycelynn Patterson ( Autismmomjoy) recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Joycelynn , so excited to have you with us today and we are really interested in hearing your thoughts about how folks can develop their empathy? In our experience, most folks want to be empathic towards others, but in a world where we are often only surrounded by people who are very similar to us, it can sometimes be a challenge to develop empathy for others who might not be as similar to us. Any thoughts or advice?
I have always been an empath by nature , however some of the many challenges I face in life including having a childhood autoimmune disorder , lupus alongside my journey recovering from a cement trucking accident allowed me to truly understand someone elses situation. My journey allowed me to pause for a moment and put myself in someone elses shoes whether it be a phsyical limitation, financial, mental or day to day life scenario with their jobs, relationships, parenting or spirutal / political viewpoints .I became able to have empathy to others early on and at times have had to seperate my emotion and deep care for others in order for me to find peace vs worrying 24/7 Faith & effort are key.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Hi , Im Autismmomjoy a mother , companion , survivor & a woman who is evolving despite chronic illness & lifelong autoimmune disorders .I have three children one of which is deceased whom is my autistic sons twin sister .Unfortunately she passed due to medical negligence & gaslighting from ignorant noncaring doctors. I am a college graduate with a major in business , as well certifications in finance marketing , cpr & aba therapy trainings. My goal is to raise awareness to various disabilities and promote small businesses as I believe in allowing businesses who want to expand an opportunity to be heard .I am working towards a non profit that caters to special needs children by providing resources ranginging from assistance to monthly pullup, diaper giveaways and foodbanks. Although I am disabled and currently unable to do the things Id like to do daily Im doing what I can despite the odds. I am evolving & here to spread the light. I am currently recovering from a cement trucking accident that broke my back, punctured a lung, ruptured my eardrum, damaged my ulnar nerve in my right arm and tried to ruin my mental health with PTSD that causes ongoing panic attacks due to trauma .I was left for dead in a cement trucking accident that has altered my life .With the crumbs Ive been left with Ive chosen to pick myself up and do what I can instead of losing hope .I hope this has inspired you & you continue to press on .
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities I’d have to sau were & remain to be my ongoing faith , dedication & the will to live despite the tr, trauma , heartache I picked myself up daily and remained determined. My skills consist of organization and not comparing my journey to others but focusing on my own path no matter how long or slow it may be its imperative to do things in my own timing .Advice id give is for people to focus on their own journey never worry about how far someone else is from where you are we all have our own journeys keep faith, pray and be Kind is my advice .
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes id love to connect with small businesses looking for marketing assistance as well as families of children with special needs and people with various disabilities or testimonials in general they wish to share .
