We recently connected with JT Hubbard and have shared our conversation below.
Hi JT , so excited to have you with us today, particularly to get your insight on a topic that comes up constantly in the community – overcoming creativity blocks. Any thoughts you can share with us?
You never really lose that power when it comes to creatives. Just a different or new setting to draw it out. I’ll often times read a book, listen to something new, or go on a road trip. For me finding a new source of inspiration pulls out the forming creativity. I’ll take a line I like from a book or part of a melody I like from something I never listen to. Mashing those ideas together and see if something special comes out. Let it come back naturally too.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
If I can only make one person smile each day I feel like I’m doing something right! Texas born and Oklahoma raised I learned what it means to be a true musician by honing my craft through patience, trial and error, and pure joy.
My music fuses details of singer songwriter bar room jams to heartbreaker ballads on bent strings. Playing guitar and writing for more than 20 years, I’ve toured the country and have written tunes others have cut. My main focus now is releasing music with my band and branching out anywhere to collab and create new material.
Our latest release is a fun summer like song filled with light and tone. “Carousel” is a song about a love story and a dance at a carnival. We’re proud of it and think everyone will like it!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on all the work I’ve put in I would have to say song writing, guitar playing and performing in a band. With writing I would recommend learning structures and rhyme patterns by reading poetry and stanzas in songs. Take those interesting ideas and start writing every one of them down. Soon you’ll start seeing ways to rhyme each line towards your overall theme. And always remember to try new words.
With learning guitar. I learned all the notes and small scales along with the chords. Then I started running those lines I had written in between changing chords. Soon after some time and a lot of practice, I was putting lyrics into rhymes into melody and chords.
And to sum up those first two skills I would recommend collaborating with others. The best part of it all is combining your talent with others. Best advice I can recommend is learn your craft and share it!

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The biggest challenge is in 2025 for most musicians is getting your music heard. With radio dying out and the rise of streaming, a lot of talents are leaning into social media. A great way to find an audience, promote yourself and to discover new markets. I’m going into next year with the idea of new music pushed through those outlets with more innovative ways of interacting!
