We were lucky to catch up with Juan Matallana recently and have shared our conversation below.

Juan, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

My resilience as the founder of Uma Concierge comes from a blend of my upbringing and personal experiences. Growing up in Bogotá, Colombia, I attended Colegio Andino Deutsche Schule, a prestigious private German school that instilled in me discipline and a strong work ethic. Moving to Miami, I continued my education at Chaminade Madonna, a private Catholic school where I further developed a commitment to excellence and integrity.

Golf has been a lifelong passion, passed down through my family. The sport has taught me patience, focus, and the importance of perseverance, all of which have been essential in my journey as an entrepreneur.

These values have guided me in building Uma Concierge into a worldwide luxury travel agency. Whether it’s offering villa rentals, yacht charters, exotic car rentals, or private jet charters, my goal has always been to curate immaculate experiences for our discerning guests, delivering the highest level of white-glove hospitality. My background and love for golf have given me the strength to push forward, creating unforgettable moments that exceed our clients’ expectations.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

As the founder of Uma Concierge, I have dedicated myself to creating a worldwide luxury travel agency that offers unique travel accommodations, including villa rentals, yacht charters, exotic car rentals, and private jet charters. My passion for curating immaculate experiences drives me to deliver the highest level of white-glove hospitality to our discerning guests.

Recently, I’ve expanded Uma Concierge internationally, now covering over 70+ destinations across the globe. From the glamorous shores of Côte d’Azur, Cannes, and St. Tropez to the vibrant energy of Ibiza, my team and I are committed to exceeding our guests’ expectations at every turn. Each experience is meticulously designed to cater to the unique desires of our clients, ensuring that their travels are not only luxurious but unforgettable.

Every detail, from the accommodations to the personalized itineraries, reflects my commitment to excellence and my passion for hospitality. At Uma Concierge, our goal is to provide a seamless, elevated experience that leaves a lasting impression on every guest.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I attribute my success to three core traits: perseverance, honesty, and integrity. Perseverance has been essential in overcoming the challenges of building a luxury travel agency from the ground up, allowing me to push through obstacles and continually expand our offerings. Honesty is at the heart of my approach, ensuring that every interaction with clients and partners is transparent and trustworthy. Integrity guides every decision I make, from curating exceptional travel experiences to maintaining the highest standards of service. These values not only define my leadership but also shape the entire ethos of Uma Concierge, ensuring that we consistently deliver on our promises and exceed our guests’ expectations.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

Both of my parents have played a crucial role in helping me overcome challenges and develop the essential skills needed for my success. From a young age, they provided me with a privileged education, which laid a strong foundation for my personal and professional growth. The opportunity to travel the world, thanks to their guidance, exposed me to diverse cultures and perspectives, which deeply influenced my approach to hospitality and service at Uma Concierge.

Their unwavering moral support has been a constant source of strength throughout my life. Whether it was advice during tough business decisions or their belief in my vision, they have always been there to guide me. My parents instilled in me the values of perseverance, integrity, and a commitment to excellence—traits that are now deeply embedded in the ethos of Uma Concierge. Their influence has been instrumental in shaping who I am today and in driving the growth and success of my company.
