We recently connected with Juan Nunez and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Juan with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Mostly From my Dad

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m an Arizona artist, I’m passionate about bringing the beauty of nature to life through my landscape paintings and murals. There’s nothing more rewarding than transforming a blank space into an immersive experience that resonates with people. Currently, I’m pouring my heart into creating murals that celebrate Arizona’s stunning landscapes, from the iconic Grand Canyon to the serene desert vistas. My goal is to inspire a sense of connection and appreciation for the natural world through my art.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
If I had to pick three things that really made a difference in my journey as a landscape muralist here in Arizona, I’d say it starts with a real love for the land itself. I mean, Arizona’s landscapes are just incredible, and that passion fuels everything I do. For anyone starting out, I’d say spend time out in the landscapes you want to paint. Really see them, feel them, and let that connection guide your work.
The second thing is learning to really “see” light and shadow. Arizona light is intense, and it changes everything. I spent time just watching how the sun moves across the desert, how it hits the rocks and cacti. My advice would be to carry a sketchbook and just do quick studies of light and shadow at different times of day. It’ll train your eye in a way nothing else can.
And finally, I’d say don’t be afraid to mess up. Seriously! Some of my best techniques came from “mistakes” I made along the way. Mural painting is a physical process, and you’re going to have days where things just don’t go right. The key is to learn from those moments, to experiment, and to keep pushing yourself. Oh, and invest in a good hat and sunscreen—trust me on that one!

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Honestly, my family especially my parents and my wife have been huge in helping me grow. My parents have been incredibly supportive, always guiding me with their wisdom and experience. My wife has also been a rock, consistently believing in me even when I doubted myself. She’s been there to help brainstorm ideas and cheer me on when things got tough. I’m so grateful for the roles my parents and wife have played in my journey; I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.
