We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Judiann Echezabal. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Judiann below.
Hi Judiann, so happy you were able to devote some time to sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our community. So, we’ve always admired how you have seemingly never let nay-sayers or haters keep you down. Can you talk to us about how to persist despite the negative energy that so often is thrown at folks trying to do something special with their lives?
I persist as a designer by staying true to my creative vision, trusting my instincts, and blocking out the noise from those who doubt me. I’ve learned to filter feedback, accepting constructive criticism that helps me grow while discarding negativity that doesn’t serve my purpose. My passion for design keeps me grounded, allowing me to continuously improve my skills and adapt to new challenges.
Surrounding myself with supportive people has been essential—I lean on a community of like-minded creatives and mentors who encourage me to push forward. Every piece of negativity only motivates me to prove my doubters wrong, fueling my determination to succeed.
Ultimately, I focus on the audience that appreciates my work. I know that not everyone will understand my vision, and that’s okay. My persistence comes from a belief in my path, patience, and an unwavering commitment to creating designs that resonate with those who matter most to me.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a designer driven by the passion to create unique, visually striking pieces that blend innovation with timeless style. My work reflects a deep love for storytelling through design, where every piece tells its own narrative. What excites me most about this journey is the ability to constantly evolve while remaining authentic to my vision. I love pushing creative boundaries, whether that’s experimenting with new materials or finding unconventional ways to showcase my work.
Recently, I had the honor of participating in some incredible fashion week shows, which was a huge milestone for me. It was exhilarating to see my designs on the runway, brought to life by talented models and creatives. Another highlight was a rooftop photo shoot that captured the essence of my latest collection—bold, expressive, and daring. It’s moments like these that make this journey so rewarding.
As for what’s next, I’m gearing up for an exciting product launch, as well as planning more pop-up events and collaborative projects. I’m always thinking of new ways to connect with my audience, and there are some big things on the horizon that I can’t wait to share.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities that have been pivotal in my journey are resilience, creative adaptability, and a deep understanding of my craft.
First, resilience has been essential. The creative field is full of ups and downs, and facing criticism or rejection is inevitable. Staying resilient helped me push through setbacks and stay true to my vision, even when others doubted me. For those early in their journey, I’d advise you to embrace failure as part of the process. Each setback teaches you something invaluable, and persistence is often what separates those who succeed from those who give up.
Second, creative adaptability has been key. The fashion and design world is always changing, and being able to evolve while maintaining your identity is crucial. I constantly explore new ideas, techniques, and trends without losing sight of what makes my work unique. My advice here is to never stop learning. Stay curious, take risks, and be open to change—because that’s where growth happens.
Lastly, a deep understanding of my craft—both technically and conceptually—has made a huge impact. Mastering the technical side of design gave me the freedom to express my ideas fully, while understanding the business and cultural aspects of fashion helped me navigate the industry with confidence. To those starting out, invest time in learning both the technical skills and the broader context of your work. The more knowledge you have, the more control you’ll have over your creative process and career.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing my father did for me ( he raised me alone after my mom died at 29) in my career was instilling in me the belief that perseverance and hard work can overcome any obstacle. He always encouraged me to chase my dreams, no matter how challenging or unconventional they seemed. His support wasn’t just about offering advice or resources; it was about teaching me the mindset of resilience. He showed me that setbacks are not failures but lessons to grow from, and that success doesn’t come overnight—it’s built through dedication, patience, and unwavering determination.
His belief in me, especially during times when I doubted myself, gave me the confidence to keep moving forward. Knowing he had my back made me fearless in pursuing my path, and that sense of security and encouragement continues to fuel my passion to this day.
