We were lucky to catch up with Judy Batista recently and have shared our conversation below.
Judy, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
My optimism is deeply rooted in my personal journey. As a first-generation American raised by my immigrant single mother, her incredible resilience in the face of adversity has been a constant source of inspiration. Despite having to abandon her education at a young age due to impoverished conditions, she instilled in me the belief that with determination, one can overcome any obstacle.
Witnessing her navigate through life with limited literacy skills yet manage to raise two college graduates has been a powerful reminder that challenges can be turned into opportunities. Growing up amidst racial discrimination has certainly tested my resolve, but each experience, including a recent one at Duke University Health System, has only strengthened my conviction.
The ability to remain optimistic, even in the face of adversity, is a testament to the strength passed down through generations. It’s not just a personal trait but a reflection of the unwavering belief that a positive outlook can shape a brighter future. My optimism, therefore, is a product of the resilience and determination that run in my family and the firm belief that every challenge is an opportunity for growth.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
After years in the corporate health system, where I faced limited growth, a lack of work-life balance, and experienced racial discrimination, my decision to transition to entrepreneurship marked the birth of Laughing Monitos.
In the corporate world, despite honing my skills and climbing the ladder, stifling structures impeded creativity. Bureaucratic red tape became a barrier to personal and professional development, prompting a desire for an environment that fosters individuality.
The demanding corporate health sector disrupted my work-life balance, leading to burnout. The relentless pressure overshadowed the healing work, compelling me to seek a change for my well-being.
Racial discrimination added another layer of challenges, urging me to seek an alternative path where talent is recognized on merit. Fueled by a desire for change and creativity, I made the bold decision to transition to entrepreneurship, founding Laughing Monitos to embrace diversity and creativity.
Laughing Monitos, with its specialized program, addresses the crucial need for speech services in children aged 0–4. Tailored activities create a stimulating environment for speech-delayed children, fostering speech and language development in a positive atmosphere.
The brand itself reflects values of authenticity, equality, and belief in a proactive approach. The entrepreneurial journey represents resilience, innovation, and a commitment to an inclusive future, breaking free from corporate constraints to create a space where diversity thrives, creativity knows no bounds, and the needs of the youngest generation are met with compassion and expertise.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
In my entrepreneurial journey, three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge proved to be particularly impactful:
1. Adaptability:
The ability to adapt to changing circumstances and pivot when necessary was crucial. Entrepreneurship is inherently dynamic, and being flexible in response to market shifts or unforeseen challenges is key. My advice for those starting their journey is to cultivate adaptability by staying informed, seeking feedback, and being open to adjusting strategies when needed. Embrace change as an opportunity for growth rather than a setback.
2. Resilience:
Entrepreneurship is a journey filled with ups and downs. Resilience is the quality that helped me navigate through setbacks, learn from failures, and keep moving forward. To develop resilience, focus on building a strong support network, maintaining a positive mindset, and viewing challenges as opportunities for learning. Embracing setbacks as part of the journey and persisting in the face of adversity will ultimately contribute to long-term success.
3. Continuous learning:
The willingness to acquire new knowledge and skills is paramount. The business landscape evolves, and staying ahead requires a commitment to continuous learning. Early on, dedicate time to expanding your expertise, whether it’s through formal education, networking, or staying abreast of industry trends. Be curious and proactive in seeking knowledge, as it not only enhances your capabilities but also positions you as an informed and adaptable entrepreneur.
Advice for those early in their journey:
Embrace a Growth Mindset:
Cultivate a mindset that views challenges as opportunities to learn and grow. Embrace feedback, seek out new experiences, and approach obstacles with a positive and solution-oriented mindset.
Build a Strong Network:
Surround yourself with a supportive network of mentors, peers, and advisors. Networking provides valuable insights, guidance, and a sense of community, which can be instrumental in overcoming challenges and fostering personal and professional growth.
Stay persistent:
Entrepreneurship often involves facing setbacks and rejections. Stay persistent in pursuing your goals, and view challenges as temporary roadblocks rather than insurmountable obstacles. Persistence, combined with a willingness to learn, is a powerful combination for long-term success.
Remember that the entrepreneurial journey is a continuous learning experience. By developing adaptability, resilience, and a commitment to ongoing learning, individuals can position themselves for success in the ever-changing business landscape.
