We were lucky to catch up with Juhoon Hong recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Juhoon, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I always want to give a shoutout to my family. Most of my self-esteem comes from their love and support. My parents taught me the beauty of this world and encouraged me to find my purpose in it. They gave me unconditional love which taught me how it feels to be truly loved. When things get overwhelming I know they will be by my side.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am currently working as a CG Artist at MAKE in Minneapolis. I directed and created the animated short ‘Detached (2022)’. I’m very excited to share this because it is one of my favorite stories and it was awarded by Oniros Film Awards®, Los Angeles Film Awards, New York International Film Awards™ etc. The synopsis is like this, after a massive explosion, a severed finger becomes sentient. To find its perfect fit, it tries to fit through different places. I know it sounds disturbing but this film has so many elements that I love. Since I can’t spoil it, I want to talk more about the aesthetics.
I like using creepy and eerie elements mixed with innocent and cute traits. The visual itself is already interesting but what I love about this combination is that you can have an opportunity for a deeper layer of stories. Detached is a perfect example of what I’m specialized in telling the story. Hope everyone gets to have a great experience watching my film.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three of the most important qualities that I think are Storytelling, Cinematography, and Literature. If you are working in an area that involves any form of audience you have to be a good storyteller. To make a compelling story you need to allow yourself to Literature. Lastly, to gather everything and visualize it make yourself comfortable with the language of the Cinematography.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
Steve Hickner played a big role in developing my visual skills. He’s He guided me through not only technical difficulties but also how to become a professional artist who knows the importance of the visual language of Cinematography.
