We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jules Hoffman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jules, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Developing confidence and self-esteem has been a journey of self-discovery and acceptance. For me, it has been about understanding and embracing my true self. It has taken me a long time to figure out how I want to present and how I want to identify in this world, and what my purpose and passion is. While I remain open to change and growth, I currently feel settled, happy, and confident in who I am. Embracing my goofiness, flaws, and insecurities has been crucial, as it reminds me that I am only human. This acceptance has allowed me to build a strong foundation of self-esteem and confidence.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I started writing music for kids in 2014 when my first nephew was born. I knew I wanted to write him songs that taught about kindness, empathy, how to self-regulate tough emotions and how to accept others. Songs that portrayed messages important for kids but that adults/parents/caretakers need too.
Fast forward 10 years later and I am now releasing some of my favorite songs that have been featured and popularized on the Youtube show “Ms. Rachel” and now have become favorites in the homes of many.
I am beyond grateful that my music is finally being released on Spotify and other music streaming platforms so that it can minimize “screen time” and maximize imagination and creativity in similar ways that I enjoyed music in my early childhood.
As with most art forms it isn’t simply something that is created over night or even in weeks and months- it is many years of hard work, learning, practicing and gathering inspiration to get to the point of creation then release.
I am so lucky to be a part of such a talented community. From my producer Catho who really helped make these songs be as good as they can be, to my bandmates Erik and Tim who are always there for me to the amazing sound engineers who record every idea until all hours of the night, and of course to my supporters and fans who have supported me from the beginning. It really does take a community and I am so lucky to have such amazing people on my team.
When I was younger even though I wrote songs I was always scared to share them with the world. I lacked confidence in myself and my music. I played my first show when I was 16 years old. I recorded an album on my family’s computer, burnt CD’s and handed them out to all of my friends. I have gone through many hobbies, sports, crafts, interests in my life but music has always been there. Even when I felt like I didn’t want to do it anymore it has always come back into my life. Music is a part of me and writing songs is my biggest source of joy and connection to the world and a way that I genuinely feel I can give back.
Releasing these songs into the world has been a dream of mine for many years. Now here we are at this moment- two sings off of the album are now released into the world, my single “Pizza Party” and “Caterpillar Butterfly Thing”. My goal with the album is to share songs that can be cherished by both children and adults alike. Songs that are on repeat in the car or at home. A way to bring a variety of different instruments and musical complexity into music made for kids but also to the inner-kid in all of us.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Creativity and the inner-child: The ability to think outside the box and come up with engaging, fun, and educational content has been crucial. Kids respond to music that is both entertaining and meaningful sometimes you have to think like a kid to make music that kids might like.. My advice to those starting out is to constantly nurture your creativity. Experiment with different musical styles, themes, and storytelling techniques. Don’t be afraid to take risks and let your imagination run wild, try to find your inner-child and nature it.
2. Empathy: Understanding and connecting with your audience is vital. Kids are incredibly perceptive, and they resonate with genuine emotions and experiences. Spend time with children, listen to their stories, and observe what captivates their attention. This will help you create music that truly resonates with them. Empathy also involves being patient and understanding with yourself as you navigate your journey.
3. Self-care: Taking care of your own well-being is essential for sustained creativity and productivity. The music industry can be demanding, and it’s easy to burn out if you don’t prioritize self-care. Ensure you get enough rest, do things you love, spend time in nature and take time to relax and recharge. My advice to those starting out is to establish a self-care routine early on. Recognize the importance of balancing work and personal life, and don’t hesitate to seek support when needed.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
I grew up in a very loving and supportive family and church. My parents encouraged me to express myself freely, allowing me to wear whatever I wanted (except on special occasions) and explore a wide range of hobbies and interests. In the same year, I played softball, soccer, basketball, African drums, and piano. Their unwavering support and acceptance allowed me to cultivate my unique sense of self. This love and encouragement have been instrumental in shaping the person I am today. I hope that parents can learn from my experience and let their children explore their interests and feel loved no matter what.
