Meet Julia Chebotar

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Julia Chebotar. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Julia , thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

As a chef who has ventured into various realms from Food Network shows to podcasts, I’ve often grappled with imposter syndrome, especially in a male-dominated culinary world. Every time I step into a competition, I feel the weight of doubt and the questioning of my abilities. I say a mantra to over come these moments “I did it for the plot”.

This phrase serves as a reminder that my journey is about the experiences, the adventures, and the stories that I get to tell, not just about the outcomes. Whether I win or lose, it’s the thrill of participating, the joy of cooking, and the passion for culinary arts that truly matter. This mindset shifts my focus from the pressure of success to the enjoyment of the process.

In those high-pressure moments, before the competition begins, I take a deep breath and remind myself that I’m here because I love what I do. I’ve earned my place through hard work, talent, and a genuine love for food. The outcome doesn’t define me – it’s the journey, the learning, and the fun that enriches my life and career.

This approach has not only helped me overcome imposter syndrome but also allowed me to live my best life, embracing every opportunity with enthusiasm and confidence, irrespective of the gender dynamics around me. It’s about cherishing each moment, learning from every experience, and always remembering why I started cooking in the first place – for the sheer love of it.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

My career as a chef and entrepreneur has been a journey full of flavor, health-conscious decisions, and a deep passion for creating memorable dining experiences. Co-founding HEALTH CHEFS with Tina De Jesus was a natural step in our shared mission to bring sustainable, seasonal, and health-focused meals to our clients. Our agency, based in New York and extending to Long Island, The Hamptons, and Miami, is a testament to our commitment to culinary excellence and personalized service.

At HEALTH CHEFS, we specialize in private chef placements, ensuring that each client’s dietary needs and preferences are met with the utmost care and creativity. Our expertise in using the finest seasonal ingredients allows us to craft unique and nourishing meals, whether it’s for everyday family dining or specialized menus for new mothers embarking on their postpartum journey.

My personal journey in the culinary world has been nothing short of exhilarating. As a chef who has emerged victorious on Food Network’s shows like “Chopped” and “Kitchen Crash,” I’ve had the opportunity to showcase my skills and creativity on a national stage. This exposure has not only honed my culinary expertise but also opened doors to contribute to various media outlets, TV shows, brands, and lifestyle magazines.

Developing new and innovative recipes is at the heart of what I do. My focus is always on creating food solutions that are healthy, sustainable, and supportive of a lifestyle that is both enjoyable and fun. The essence of my work lies in the belief that the meals we share and the memories we create around the dinner table are invaluable. It’s the magic of sharing a meal with loved ones that truly encapsulates the spirit of HEALTH CHEFS.

This journey has been about more than just cooking; it’s been about fostering a connection through food, championing health and sustainability, and making a difference in the way people enjoy their meals. It’s a career that continues to evolve and inspire, and I am excited to see where this flavorful path takes me next.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my culinary journey, I can identify three key elements that have been pivotal in shaping my success. Here’s how they’ve impacted me and advice for those who are just beginning their path:

Embracing Self-Belief Over Self-Doubt: Early on, I wrestled with imposter syndrome. But over time, I learned to channel this into a driving force. By embracing these doubts and transforming them into motivation, I pushed myself to become the best version of the chef I aspired to be. It’s like water off a duck’s back – you acknowledge the doubts but don’t let them weigh you down. For those starting out, my advice is to recognize that self-doubt is natural. Use it as a tool to fuel your ambition, not hinder it. Every time you feel inadequate, remind yourself of your achievements, no matter how small, and use them as stepping stones to build confidence.

Finding Joy in the Process: The culinary world can be demanding, but it’s essential to find joy in what you do. Having fun and enjoying the journey is crucial. This approach not only makes the daily grind more enjoyable but also inspires creativity and passion in your work. If you’re at the beginning of your career, remember to take a moment to appreciate the small successes and the learning experiences. Enjoy the process of creating, experimenting, and growing. This mindset will not only make your work more fulfilling but also attract positive energy and opportunities.

Continuous Learning and Adaptability: The food industry is ever-evolving, and staying informed and adaptable has been key to my growth. It keeps you on your toes! This involves being open to new techniques, flavors, and trends, as well as being willing to learn from both successes and failures. For those just starting, it’s important to adopt a mindset of continuous learning. Attend workshops, follow industry trends, experiment with new ideas, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. This continuous growth not only keeps your skills sharp but also ensures that you remain relevant and innovative in a competitive field.

Always remember, to embrace your doubts and turn them into strengths! find joy in every step of your journey, and commit to lifelong learning and adaptability. These principles not only help in building a successful career but also in finding personal fulfillment and satisfaction in life! Enjoy the ride!

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents ever did for me was their brave decision to immigrate from Ukraine with me as an infant. Their choice to leave behind everything familiar in pursuit of a better future for our family has fundamentally shaped who I am today.

Growing up, I was always aware of the sacrifices they made. They left their home, their family, and their friends, venturing into an unknown world with little more than hope and resilience. This bold move wasn’t just about seeking better economic opportunities; it was about securing a future where their child could have freedoms, choices, and a life they could only have dreamt of in Ukraine.

Their journey wasn’t easy. They faced countless challenges, from language barriers to cultural adjustments, and the hard work required to establish a new life in a foreign land. But their determination and courage were unwavering. They instilled in me the values of hard work, perseverance, and the importance of seizing opportunities.

Their story is a constant reminder to me that life is about taking chances and making the most of the opportunities that come your way. It taught me to be resilient, to adapt to new situations, and to appreciate the diverse perspectives that shape our world. Most importantly, their journey imbued in me a deep sense of gratitude – for the life I have, the opportunities I’ve been given, and for the sacrifices they made to provide me with a better future.

This experience has been the cornerstone of my character and my outlook on life. It’s a testament to the strength and courage of my parents, and a guiding force in my own decisions and actions. Their choice to immigrate for a better future has not only impacted my life but continues to inspire and motivate me in everything I do.
