We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Julia Cole a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Julia, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
My whole life I was wondering what was my purpose, although from the outside I always made it look like I was in alignment with my craft of the time, I knew I was faking it. I was desperate for the connection to my work. Directly out of college I went into Fashion, being from New York this seemed like a girl’s dream, ultimately the industry was tough and I honestly didn’t have the kind of interest you needed to rise to the top. I quickly transitioned into a higher paying job in real estate thinking financial gain would motivate me, it did not. I used to pray that I would find my purpose, the job I wanted to marry, and eventually after some personal hardship in my 20’s I went into a profession that was in service to others, I became a therapist. My desperation to be authentic and enjoy my work life felt curial to my overall success as a human. I needed this relentless attitude to in my 30s go back to go back to grad school and become an intern after being in a successful/ lucrative career. The road to becoming a therapist was long but as I sit now in my own private practice, I can now say with confidence I am in my craft and I have found my purpose.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I have my own private practice where I see clients virtually. Once a week I go into a treatment center for addiction and run therapy groups.
My mission is to create a safe, non-judgmental space for clients seeking positive change. With a deep understanding of the human psyche, my purpose is to guide you in breaking free from negative and fearful patterns that may be holding you back. I am here to empower you to take risks, embrace accountability, and nurture your integrity as you are on a journey of self-discovery.
I draw from a blend of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Positive Psychology, and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing treatment (EMDR). In addition, as a spiritual student and therapist, I bring a unique blend of alternative approaches, such as inner child work, Internal Family Systems (IFS) or Parts Work and Mindfulness-Based Therapy (MBCT).
These tools will help you navigate your inner landscape and unlock the potential for transformation and growth.
I believe in meeting people where they are and taking a client-directed modern approach to therapy to help them increase their self-esteem, confidence, happiness, and inner peace.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1) Personal development, if you want to be a therapist and make life changing suggestions to your clients, you need to walk the walk yourself. All the advice I give, I make sure to take, I am constantly in trainings and in personal and group therapy. I have cured alot of my own issues through this work and as a result can relate to my clients being on the other side of the issue.
2) Working in an inpatient rehab was incredible expose and experience to be in the mental health field
3) ““Hard choices, easy life. Easy choices, hard life.” — Jerzy Gregorek”
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The Untethered soul by Michael Singer, is a 101 spiritual psychology book. I have most all my clients read the book, some state that it feels like a meditation. As an analyst I find myself very cognitively heavy, trapped in my head, this book helps to navigate negative thoughts and free myself from the confines of the brain and my emotions, understanding limitations of fear & be in pursuit of a happier, more balanced life that is filled with love.
