We recently connected with Julia Deaton and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Julia, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
From having to pick myself up time and time again throughout life. I’ve had to overcome numerous obstacles in my personal life which has given me the strength to implement that in business as well.
Also coming to grips with the fact that failure is part of the process. No one is perfect at something the first go-round and you’re not going to become exceptional without getting back up and trying again and again.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Well, I named my business after my grandparents. They saved me from a very dark path and I owe them the world and that’s what makes me different. I understand that life can be dark and confusing and not everybody has someone to explain to them some of the intricacies of adulting or of life. I like being helpful in that way because I was lucky enough to have my grandparents to guide me and being in healthcare and helping people with something as vulnerable as health insurance is an opportunity for me to pay it forward the way they did.
I really like to focus on first-generation business owners such as myself. Taking the plunge to start my own business was the scariest move I made because I had no knowledge of what that would look like. So if I get to help these guys navigate the world of benefits and also refer them to other professionals to help them in other areas, I know I’ve done my part.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Having prior healthcare knowledge entering the health insurance world was a HUGE leg up for me. I’ve been in healthcare for 5 years now and that perspective has allowed me to show a different level of empathy for folks who struggle with health concerns and need a health plan to protect them.
I would say the most important quality you need though is confidence. If you don’t think you can run a successful business, you’re right. If you think you can, you’re right. A combination of confidence and also a strong mindset. You have to be able to feed yourself positivity even when everything in you is telling you to give up. The mental strain in being a business owner is not talked about often enough.
My advice is to beef up your confidence and mindset from the START. Implement morning affirmations, visualization, etc to your morning routine to feed your brain the positivity it needs to get through the day. You’ll be glad you did because business ownership is incredibly turbulent, especially your first year.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I absolutely am! Along with first-gen business owners, I want to collaborate with boss ladies in the beauty industry! Cosmetology was my first love and partnering with people in the industry would feed my soul just as much as having the opportunity to help them!
So whether you’re a hairstylist, barber, makeup artist, aesthetician, med spa owner, or all of the above.. I’d love to have the opportunity to work with any and everyone.
