Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Julia Morales Clark. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Julia, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I would have to give a lot of credit to my father who displayed a ton of resilience when he ran for U.S. Senate in 1996. He was a school teacher who had a dream of helping people and making change. He did the impossible and landed on the ballot, becoming the first Hispanic to do so for that office. He didn’t win but his campaign and journey got lots of national attention and inspired so many with what he did and why he did it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I have been a sports broadcaster for 15 years and the last 11 I have spent as a member of the Houston Astros broadcast as the field reporter for the team. Last year, I launched an apparel line designed for baseball fans, baseball moms who spend a good amount of time at ballparks across the country. I wanted to offer an option to someone who spends their Saturdays at little league fields but could dress it up for a Major League Baseball game. It has now expanded to softball, making sure family members can be geared up before big tournaments for all ages.
It was a lot of fun to launch just before the postseason, the ‘Champs,Y’all’ line doing extremely well following a championship. It’s been a dream to see the shirts and hats at Astros games but also see pics of fans wearing it at high school, travel and summer ball games. I hope to continue to add styles for baseball fans but for other sports soon.
Most sales are done online but be on the lookout for occasional pop ups at ballparks around the Houston area.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
For broadcasting, the will to work will be key in getting your foot in the door, having the knowledge necessary and then executing. It’s a tough industry with a lot of competition and the deadlines are firm. I tell students to start shaking hands, making introductions and setting yourself and your brand up for what could come. Don’t be afraid to say yes even if it’s not the perfect job in the perfect city.
Time management is key for me now as I am settled in my career but starting a business on the side as well as being a mom. I’ve had to learn how to ask for help and be present when things start to become overwhelming. It’s not easy but it’s incredibly rewarding and makes me very happy.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am looking for ways to extend my reach and connect with more sports fans! I have a lot of experience in pop ups and have loved doing VIP shopping events to raise money for one of my favorite non-profits, Houston Pets Alive. I am always looking for ways to get my product out in front of new clients. Please reach out to contact@juliamorales.com, if you have any events coming up or have an idea!
