We were lucky to catch up with Julia Nepini recently and have shared our conversation below.
Julia, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I believe that the definition of success is identifying the unique skills you possess, embracing them, and sharing them with as many people as possible. Identifying my purpose has been my life’s mission. From a young age, I found myself in a caretaking position and developed an identity as a nurturer. It became clear early on that I would land in a helping profession, chose to major in sociology with a concentration in social work my first year of college and have never looked back. Purpose and meaning for me has always come from relationships and is enhanced through curiosity, mutual understanding, vulnerability, and being fully seen and accepted. As a therapist and later as a supervisor, teacher, consultant, and boss, I have made a career out of establishing trusting relationships early and achieving identified goals through conversation and connection. My purpose has become clear through the fulfillment that results from the relationships I have formed, work I do, and family I have created.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a clinical and forensic social worker who owns the group counseling practice, Compassionate Counseling Company, and the consulting business, Compassionate Consulting Company, where I help entrepreneurs start, expand, and diversify their businesses through 1:1 coaching, mastermind groups, trainings, and intensives. I also host the Compassionate Climb podcast where I discuss being successful in business while maintaining integrity.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Self-awareness: having a genuine interest in understanding myself and becoming the best version possible has enabled me to engage in healthier relationships with others and myself
Communication: my desire to engage in effective conversations and understand the people around me has contributed to my success
Emotional intelligence: my capacity to identify, express, and control my emotions while remaining compassionate and empathetic of others has been beneficial as a leader, partner, and parent
My advise for others in terms of developing and improving on what I listed above would be life-long learning. By determining your learning style and absorbing as much information as you can about yourself and others enhances the quality of your life and relationships.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Becoming a leader has been most helpful in developing the essential skills to be successful. It is extremely important to me to be to be the type of practice owner my team deserves and this role has inspired me to continue to learn as much as possible about myself to be effective for them. My own therapy, learning about the Enneagram, Myers Briggs, and Human Design, as well as self-help books and podcasts have been essential in my process of understanding the dynamics in my relationships, managing my own reactions, and depersonalizing behavior.
