Meet Julia Palfi

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Julia Palfi a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Julia , thank you so much for making time for us today. We can’t wait to dive into your story and the lessons you’ve learned along the way, but maybe we can start with something foundational to your success. How have you gone about developing your ability to communicate effectively?

I was incredibly shy as a kid all the way through high school. A lot of the times, I was actually speechless when trying to make conversation. Thankfully, I found friends who were outgoing enough to balance me out. However, I wanted to cultivate the ability to be outgoing in myself, as it was a trait I admired.

When in college, I got involved in professional development organizations that would require a high level of verbal communication, like a volunteer group that had us present our progress in front of hundreds of people. These wonderful groups and the people in them gave me structures for everyday verbal communication and public speaking. Additionally, the organizations pushed me to implement these new skills.

While the process of practicing various degrees of verbal communication was not at all comfortable, I am so glad I faced my fears to learn these important skills. It’s also nice knowing that even though my natural inclination was a certain way, I had the ability to change it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m the owner of a women’s luxury loungewear company called ThreadRally.

In the past few years, many more people started to work from home. I found it interesting to observe what NYC women actually wanted to wear without as much peer pressure affecting their clothing choices – sweatpants. So, my thought was: what could I do to make sweatpants something women felt comfortable wearing all the time while still feeling good about how they look.

I have some experience in visual art, so can definitely appreciate the value of visual appeal. I applied my creative background to building a company centered around stylish sweatpants for women that are still comfortable.

Sweatpants are such a quintessentially American clothing staple that is a part of so many of our everyday lives. My goal in focusing on style and comfort when creating ThreadRally’s luxury sweatpants was for women to feel good about wearing sweatpants all the time.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I would say curiosity, communication, and perseverance.

My thoughts on these traits for folks early in their journey:
– To me, curiosity involves observing and learning. I think allowing yourself time to be curious can spark new ideas, whether it’s for a painting or a new product.
– So much of owning and running a company is about relationship-building. It’s not just with customers, it’s with all of the folks you work with. My advice would be to put thought into maintaining all of these relationships, which, of course, is centered around communication.
– In terms of perseverance, I think this is often an overlooked part of the journey to fulfilling your goal. I would choose or adjust your goal to focus on something that is highly interesting to you. This passion should help with putting in all of the effort needed to fulfill it to its full potential.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I would love to collaborate with costume designers and fashion stylists – please reach out to us at hello@threadrally.com if you’re interested in partnering with us!
