We recently connected with Julian Haskins and have shared our conversation below.
Julian, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever head any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?
In moments of a creative block, I have learned that it’s my Que to rest. Whether it be for a day or a month. I take that time to experience life. Try new things that I’ve never done or experienced. I let the creativity re-ignite naturally. Anytime something is forced, it’s never going to be enjoyable or come out the way it should.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a Visual Artist/Creator & Art Director. The lane that I am currently in has allowed me to reach areas of my creativity that I didn’t know existed. For a long time all I knew was that I wanted to paint or create art in some form. I was then recruited to be an Art Director for an upcoming web series entitled Mad Millennial. Being in this role has expanded my abilities and opened doors I had no idea were available. I’m learning life behind the camera and how the small details matter
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My ability to be open minded, seeing and approaching everything as a new exciting experience.
Learning to do things for yourself then delegate. Understanding that when you first start, a lot of times the funds aren’t there. Do you have to learn to improvise and do things yourself. Learn what you like and how you like things done then finding people who can align with that and provide great information.
Knowing that you don’t know. It’s okay to not know. It gives you the ability to learn and keep an open mind. It’s always better to listen.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
Ray Johnson. This man is like my art big brother. He’s been showing me the ropes since day one. He’s unselfish with knowledge and is always looking five steps ahead. He’s taught me so much about just being yourself, how quality of work benefits the artist. Your preparation should be second nature but always try to challenge yourself in your style.
