Meet Julie Ahmad

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Julie Ahmad a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Julie, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I originally thought my purpose was to be a solo artist. When I first picked up a paintbrush during my pregnancy, it was this powerful, almost primal urge to create. Abstract art gave me the freedom to express myself in a way I had never experienced before.

But after having kids and becoming rooted in the Austin art community, my purpose started to evolve. I began to see how underrepresented women artists were, how much incredible talent was going unseen, and how isolating this journey could feel for so many. That fire I once felt just for my own work shifted toward something bigger.

That’s why I created The Women’s Gallery. What started as a personal studio grew into a mission-driven space to amplify the voices of women artists. I realized I didn’t just want to succeed, I wanted to change the stats, build a platform, and create the kind of support system I wish I’d had. My purpose is no longer just about making art, it’s about making space.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

We don’t just hang art, we throw unforgettable parties that put our artists center stage. These events are full of energy, connection, and meaning. Guests mingle with the artists, sip cocktails, dance to the DJ, and leave with original pieces that carry the spirit of the night home with them.

We’ve continued to grow, adding more artists, expanding our space, and deepening our impact. Our next big event is coming up on September 13th: Introducing… The Women’s Gallery | Post-Summer Show 2025. This is the official relaunch of our gallery with over 16 incredible female artists and double the square footage. It’s your first look at our new space and a celebration of everything we’ve been building.

Whether you come out to support these talented women in person, or get involved behind the scenes, there are so many ways to be part of this movement. We’re not just selling art, we’re rewriting the story of who gets seen in the art world.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1. Vision and the Courage to Pivot

What started as a solo art career evolved into something much bigger, creating a platform for women in the arts. Being willing to pivot and lead with purpose changed everything.

Advice: Stay open, your purpose may grow beyond what you first imagined.

2. Community Building

Bringing people together through art parties, collaborations, and connection has been one of the most powerful parts of this journey.

Advice: Focus on relationships, community can elevate your work in ways you can’t do alone.

3. Resilience and Self-Belief

This path hasn’t been easy, but believing in my vision, even before others did, helped me keep going.

Advice: Protect your energy and be mindful of how and with whom you spend your time. Surround yourself with people who support your growth and make space for the work that truly matters.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Yes, absolutely, we’re always looking to collaborate with brands and businesses that want to support the arts and help build community here in Austin. Whether you’re interested in sponsoring one of our shows, partnering on an event, or just want to attend and invite your network, there are so many ways to get involved.

If you’re reading this and want to explore a collaboration, we’d love to connect. You can reach us at [email protected] or visit thewomensgallery.org/artevents-austintexas to see what’s coming up.
