Meet Julie Macala

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Julie Macala. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Julie below.

Julie, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.

I’ve found that taking regular breaks from creative work has been incredibly beneficial. There’s a lot of pressure on artists to always be productive and appear effortlessly creative. However, allowing myself to make something that isn’t perfect or even good has been a game-changer for overcoming creative blocks. I remind myself that just because I haven’t produced anything lately doesn’t diminish my artistic abilities.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

As a creative, I wear many hats! I’m a REALTOR with Red 1 Realty, Event Planner, and Artist based in Columbus, Ohio. I enjoy projects with a clear end goal, whether it’s helping a first-time buyer find their dream home, finishing a piece of art, or celebrating the success of an event. I thrive on variety, but at my core, I’m driven by creative thinking and action.

I’m currently assisting residential buyers and sellers of all backgrounds, with a particular affinity for first-time homeowners. Whether you’re new to town or a longtime resident, I’m dedicated to helping you explore the exciting possibilities of homeownership in Columbus.

My real estate work and event planning go hand-in-hand, as both contribute to the growth and vitality of our community. I’m currently organizing two annual events that showcase local artists and small businesses:

The 13th Hour Hallow-Market is a spooky Halloween-themed market featuring local vendors, live entertainment, and a costume contest and The Merry Krampus, Columbus’ original dark holiday market returns Saturday, December 7th at The Kee! This unique holiday market celebrates the folklore of Krampusnacht. Enjoy shopping, photos with Krampus and Santa, and support our favorite nonprofit, Colony Cats and Dogs.

At all my events, I aim to encourage community members to support local artists and vendors rather than large corporations. By attending these events, you can enjoy a unique shopping experience, contribute to our local economy, and have a memorable time!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

My relationship skills have been invaluable in all areas of my life, especially as a real estate agent. Connecting with clients on a personal level is the heart of my job. Anyone can look at a house and tell you how many bathrooms is has, but understanding my clients’ personalities and needs while guiding them through such a significant decision is what they really need. I strive to help my clients feel seen, understood, and valued. Their goals and unique personalities are at the forefront of everything I do.

A career in sales requires grit, as unpleasant conversations and scenarios are inevitable. I strive to minimize these for my buyers and sellers, but they’re also a constant in event planning. Expect the unexpected and be prepared to stay calm, adapt, and keep things moving smoothly despite challenges that are bound to arise.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, don’t be afraid to take risks! If things don’t work out, it’s okay. But the feeling of accomplishment when they do is unparalleled. I believe that embracing risk is essential for creativity and passion. Stress and excitement are natural byproducts of pursuing something you love. Do something that you’re proud to share with others.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

Always happy to connect! As a Columbus native and fellow creative, I love meeting new people and fostering connections within our community.
