Meet Julie Walton Garland

We were lucky to catch up with Julie Walton Garland recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Julie, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.

My optimism comes from a deep believe that challenges can lead to growth and that there’s always something to learn or be grateful for – even in the hard moments. I’ve seen time and time again that things have a way of working out, especially when you stay focused, be kind and keep showing up. That perspective helps me stay hopeful, even when the path isn’t clear.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I run Walton’s Jewelry, a third-generation, family owned and operated jewelry store in Historic Downtown Franklin, Tennessee. We specialize in antique and estate jewelry – pieces with rich history, timeless design and exceptional craftsmanship. What makes what we do so special is the connection each piece creates – between the past and the present, and between the giver and the receiver. It’s not just about jewelry; it’s about legacy, love stories and celebrating life’s meaningful moments. I feel incredibly lucky to help people find something beautiful that tells their story and will be cherished for generations to come.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, the three most impactful qualities in my journey have been adaptability, emotional intelligence and a willingness to keep learning.

Adaptability has helped me navigate the many changes that come with running a multi-generational family business – honoring tradition while embracing innovation. Emotional intelligence has been key to building strong relationships, whether with clients, coworkers, or industry partners. And staying curious – always being open to learning more about my craft, my business and myself – has helped me grow in ways I never expected.

For those early in their journey, my advice is this: Be open to change, even when it feels uncomfortable. Take time to really listen and understand the people around you – it will take you farther than you think. And never stop learning – whether it’s through formal education or simply asking questions and observing those you admire. Growth doesn’t come from having all the answers, but from being willing to seek them.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

My dad has been one of the most influential people in helping me overcome challenges and grow into the role I have today. Watching him interact with people taught me the power of genuine connection and how important it is to treat everyone with kindness and respect. His deep knowledge of gemology and his openness to change – especially in a business rooted in tradition – showed me that change is not only possible, but necessary.
