Meet Julieta Gerlein

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Julieta Gerlein. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Julieta, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

As the days, months, and years passed, I discovered that this famous syndrome would appear, creating doubts and making me question my abilities, while generating uncertainty and fear about the future. Every time I tried to control it, I succeeded and felt at peace for overcoming it. However, as a surprise, at the least expected moment, it would resurface, bringing back fear, uncertainty, and doubt.

When I realized that this “imposter” didn’t completely disappear and that, at any moment, it could destroy everything I had worked so hard to build, I decided to turn it into an ally. I began to see it as a messenger I could use to my advantage. Whenever it appeared, I would seize the opportunity to question and appreciate everything I had achieved, looking back on my memories and past moments of success and overcoming challenges. This way, I could restore my confidence and the strength I needed to keep moving forward.

I began to view this messenger as an opportunity to reflect on areas I could improve. And so, I started walking with more peace and confidence, no longer fearing the presence of this character that, unfortunately, has destroyed careers, dreams, and projects. I decided not to fear it anymore, knowing that it may appear at some point, but also knowing that when it does, I will remember all the progress I’ve made, all the growth I’ve experienced, and, why not, the things I can still improve upon.

I invite everyone to turn this famous impostor into an ally, one that helps you grow instead of holding you back. Turn this imposter into a bridge that takes you forward, not a wall that stops you.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am a Colombian actress who arrived in Los Angeles three years ago to study acting. During this time, I attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Hollywood, the oldest acting school in the English-speaking world, founded in 1884. There, I had the opportunity to meet spectacular individuals and acquire knowledge that I will never forget, which has been fundamental in my career. Since then, I have been forging my path in the acting industry of this vibrant city, surrounded by talented and dedicated people. During my training, I have participated in various theater and independent film productions, enriching my experience and acting skills. My passion for acting and commitment to the art drive me to continue growing professionally and to contribute stories that resonate with the audience.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The magic of acting lies in the fact that, throughout its process, essential qualities like perseverance and skills such as learning to overcome failure are developed.

On set, every performance requires repetition and constant adjustments to achieve the ideal version, teaching us to embrace mistakes as part of the process. Understanding that failure is not an obstacle but a tool for improvement transforms our perspective and drives us to achieve excellence.

While in acting, error and repetition are natural allies, in other fields like business or sports, many people fear making mistakes and seek instant perfection. This fear of failure often hinders their progress, sometimes even leading them to abandon their dreams.

In contrast, in acting, embracing error and repetition as engines of growth not only enhances your artistic level but also fosters a habit of resilience and continuous improvement. By applying these principles to your life, you unlock the power to pursue your goals with confidence and build the most important movie of all: the one about your own life.

A piece of advice for those just starting out is to remember that great goals and peaks are achieved as a team. Seek out and rely on mentors who have already walked the path. Having the humility to learn from them places you on the shoulders of giants, giving you a clearer and broader perspective.

In my experience, finding great mentors has been essential. Their example and guidance have not only helped me climb higher but also taught me to enjoy every step of the journey.

Fall in love with the process and treasure your mentors.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?

A book that has played a significant role in my personal development is The Magic of Thinking Big by David J. Schwartz. It taught me the importance of believing in my dreams and the power of managing my thoughts. One of the most impactful lessons from the book is that success starts with how you think; when you believe in yourself and your abilities, you open the door to incredible possibilities. It also emphasizes the importance of staying positive and taking action, even when faced with challenges. This mindset has been invaluable in helping me stay focused on my goals and build the confidence to pursue my dreams in acting.
