Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Justin Barr. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Justin , thanks for sitting with us today to chat about topics that are relevant to so many. One of those topics is communication skills, because we live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?
I’ve always been naturally curious, and I believe that effective communication starts with listening. Success often comes down to truly hearing others and responding thoughtfully.
By working in different fields, working with different types of people with unique backgrounds enabled me to better understand how people learn differently and need an effective communicator to deliver the information on their level.
For example, when I worked as a spine surgery consultant in operating rooms I needed to effectively and concisely communicate to surgeons and various hospital staff under pressure. During the procedure it is imperative that the equipment and technology is used in a safe and timely manner. You need to know what to say and to whom based on their specialization, when is the appropriate time to speak up but also, how to best communicate with each individual in an environment that might involve various personalities.
Another experience that comes to mind was when I managed and directed the golf fitness department at one of the largest country clubs in the US with over 4000 members. These members came from literally all over the country to settle seasonally or year-round. This was an excellent breeding ground to beta test performance training concepts with demographics spanning from teenage through people in their 80s. To achieve positive outcomes with such a vast demographic you must learn to be dynamic and fluid rather than be strict and laser focused approach in delivering your messaging. Keeping the messaging straight forward and simple while utilizing different styles to enable full retention is crucial. The ability to be fluid in communication enables the participant to understand your lesson regardless of age or ability to utilize technology.
This leads me to a recent situation where I was referred a client by a golf pro. The instructor wasn’t sure how to further progress the golfer being that they had taken them as far as their know-how could. During every assessment, I go through their full background including: sport history, analysis of their swing, measuring their fitness ability/how well they move, medical history, and even nutrition. These questions help me gather information about the person, but can give clues about how they learn and ultimately how to best communicate the course of action so they achieve a successful outcome. In this case, the player had a strong athletic background as a former pro basketball player, but even with 2 years of lessons from a number of instructors, he could not make the breakthrough needed to play well and have fun. Speaking to this player using basketball terminology filled the gap and allowed him to understand the look and feel of what was being asked of him. Techniques and instruction that had felt strange and confusing now shifted his viewpoint. He could draw on skills and terms he was familiar with, but in relation to golf. After training with me for 6 weeks he won his club championship!
The pursuit of each experience helped me grow my unique set of skills that has enabled me to build a greater understanding of people and how they operate and what they need to optimize their success.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Being able to see through the noise and understand what is really going on. Deep empathy and being humble while always showing a willingness to grow, learn, and improve.
You don’t have to have everything figured out to be successful. Nevertheless, you should ask yourself the following questions:
What am I uniquely positioned to do that no one else can?
What insights do I see that no one is acting on?
What makes me special, and how can I utilize my superpower to the greatest extent possible?
Remember this and you will be able to manifest your boldest dreams. It’s your journey – BE COURAGEOUS!
Feel like you need assistance or a touch of guidance I strongly suggest you hire a coach or mentor. It takes courage to ask for help but it can save you time and money so in the long run you’ll thank yourself.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I welcome the opportunity to connect with physicians and medical professionals to assist and support their patients’ goals in their sport. Dr. Charlton Stucken, who recently performed the Achilles tear surgery on Tiger Woods was so pleased with the post-surgery rehab of a player I was working with after a ‘Crippleball’ accident he was curious of my methods. Having a good support system in place ensures that these people achieve their desired outcome by overcoming an injury or a disability.
Additionally, I strive to work closely with golf instructors and golf clubs – this is the foundation to deliver positive outcomes on a larger scale. Whether it’s collaborating and working with an individual player, partnering and providing a program for the golf club or team, or speaking at your event.
Teamwork makes the dream work and it’s the missing piece to elevate your game! I’ve teamed up with Top 100 Golf Instructors around the US and have enjoyed the honor to help players win tournaments, become their clubs champion and even secure that D-1 scholarship. Let’s team up! It’s a win, win.
Finally, I welcome the opportunity to connect with anyone who is seeking to achieve something greater in their life. This might be a person who wants to feel and look their best. Someone who welcomes guidance and support so that they are held accountable and empowered to stay focused. A person who desires a calming positive influence and be an honest sounding board to their goals. Remember, you don’t look like your goals; you look like your habits. Having a mentor/coach to provide accurate feedback is a great way to provide a road map to grow personally and professionally.
