Meet Justin Chart

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Justin Chart. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Justin , first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

By that I feel you are asking in a world of so many musicians copying and trying to be and play like their heroes, what
makes me the original that I am. I am going to quotes from the new review of my record
“Today’s Tomorrow” “In a world of auto tuned AI, and copy and paste, Justin Chart shows us that he can write an incredible piece of music, yes, on the spot while he is playing it, and seamlessly and fluidly do what few can do. Sure, many jazz artists improvise with ease, however that is within the construct of a pre-written song. Chart intuitively writes the melodies, rhythm, calls chord changes and pulls it off like he had played it a dozen times before. Chart is a force of nature as well as a master improvisational architect, both subtle and sophisticated.”

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’ve never been a musician to chase trends, My vibe is hard bop some have called it “Beyond Bop”. It shows the brilliance of invention with pure soul, devoid of all pretentiousness, that is ultimately infectious, I play with a staggering technique, and a mind for innovation. My improvisational style is explosive, playing and intricate compositional changes at will.
Since 1986 I have explored music of all cultures familiar and diverse. With 17 albums under my belt, I am proud to say I have been signed to Iron Mountain Records, Palms Records, Decca Records, and my 18th album, my 1oth with
Universal Music Group, “Night Heat” will be hitting the global airwaves in August 2024.
Well, that’s some heavy horn blowing!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Being aware of being aware

Develop your own style. There are to many cats sounding like the past.
Melody means so much. I can play as fast as anyone on this realm, that’s not what counts.
It seems like some guys are just racing to the next red light. Have fun. It’s all about the tune.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

My parents were very supportive of me. Looking back that was so wonderful.
My Mom was my biggest fan, and back in the 90’s we sang 2 duets together.
It is a fantastic feeling seeing your folks in the audience at your shows.
A memory I will cherish forever. They are on line. I’m sure you can find them if you choose to.
