We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Justin Daniels a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Justin, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
My self-discipline comes from many people that are or have been in my life. Self-Discipline starts at an early age with how you are raised and I feel that I was raised by the best parents in the world who taught me early on that if you want something you need to make sure and go after it. While growing up I also had many teachers and coaches that helped me become a leader and someone that everyone can count on to get things completed. In school I had teachers that were willing to gives us the work and push us to be productive citizens after we graduated.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
The career path that I have chose was one that helps the people of my community as well as around the world. I am a Victim Advocate for my local Prosecutor’s Office where I am the the go to person for people that have been a victim of a crime. When I am not working at the Prosecutor’s Office I am an avid ultra distance runner representing the COPD Foundation and the millions of people worldwide dealing with the disease. I have completed 68 marathons in 48 states as well as race distances of 200 miles and 314 miles since my dad was diagnosed with COPD in 2013. I also represent some of the best brands in running because of their values to want to help people and provide people with great quality products at a good price.
Currently I represent the following companies as an Ambassador or Sponsored Athlete: COPD Foundation, Newton Running, Shokz Headphones, SaltStick, RoadID, Alter-Ego Running, ROKA Sports, GoPro and Bib Rave.
Throughout the year I am also the High School Track and Cross Country Coach for Union City Jr/Sr High School as well as an assistant Boys Basketball Coach at Monroe Central High School.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
When I look back and think about the qualities, skills or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey to where I’m at now I would have to say they are 1. The ability to talk to people and gain as much information as I can. 2. Being a good listener so I could get all of the information needed to do whatever tasks needed done. 3. My community around me because I have been able to see how well they are working together and learn from what I’ve saw to help me become a better person to them and the people I deal with at work.
My advice for people who are early in their journey to gain more knowledge or skills would have to be always listen to the people around you and talk to everyone that you come in contact with. Everyone has a story and with a little time you can get a great deal of Knowledge that can help you throughout your life.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am always looking to partner or collaborate with people that have the same values as I do. I am looking for people or businesses that are looking to make the world a better place one day at a time and helping the people that are unable to help themselves. If given the chance to partner with a person or business I will make sure that their logo is on all clothing that I wear while I am running as well on social media accounts that I am affiliated with. I will also make sure that they are represented to the best of my ability and make sure they get the recognition that they deserve.
