We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Justin Hundley. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Justin below.
Hi Justin, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
For many years, I felt as though my purpose was just out of reach. Looking back, I now see that—even in the times I was lost—God always had a plan for my life and for my family. I believe we all serve an overarching purpose, one that shifts and deepens as we grow. Perhaps it isn’t so much that our purpose changes, but that with maturity, it comes into clearer focus.
In my younger years, I chased things that were far from beneficial and lived recklessly. Alcohol soon took hold of my life, and what began as a distraction turned into a decade-long struggle. Through it all, God still had a vision for me, though I was blind to it at the time. Ironically, while I wavered in belief—sometimes acknowledging God, other times keeping Him at arm’s length—I never truly knew Him.
What kept me moving forward was my love for my wife and children. They gave me a reason to strive for more, even when I was far from where I needed to be. In searching for a way to better provide for them, I found myself drawn into the insurance industry. My first attempt in 2010 as a captive agent didn’t last long, and I stepped away for about seven years. Then, in 2017, I was reintroduced to the industry through Field Marketing Organizations. In that role, I recruited and mentored Medicare agents, helping them build their businesses. After seven years of coaching others, I felt a pull to return to selling insurance myself. I had seen firsthand how vulnerable Medicare members were being taken advantage of, and I wanted to be a voice of integrity in an industry that desperately needed it.
That conviction led me, in February of 2024, to start Mountaineer Health and Life Insurance in West Virginia. What began as a Medicare-focused agency has since grown to include health insurance, life insurance, and retirement planning. Over the past nineteen months, we’ve been blessed to serve hundreds of families in our community, and each day that number continues to grow. It has been one of the greatest joys of my life to educate and help people without ever having to charge them for our services.
Yet even as my business flourished, I was still quietly battling alcohol. I told myself that because I was providing for my family and running a successful company, I had it all together—but the truth was, I didn’t. In His mercy, God revealed to me that freedom was possible, even before I truly knew Him. In January of 2025, I took my last drink. Through AA, I began praying in gratitude, and those simple prayers opened the door to something greater. In April, I fully surrendered my life to Jesus Christ and accepted Him as my Lord and Savior.
Since then, my purpose has been redefined. God has given me a new direction in leading my family, growing my business, and serving my community. More importantly, He has entrusted me with the opportunity to testify to His grace and guide others to Him. I look forward with great anticipation to the future He is shaping—for my family, for my business, and for every life He allows me to impact along the way.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
What excites me most about my work is the opportunity to make a complicated, often overwhelming subject—insurance—clear and accessible for people. I wear many hats, because our business covers the full spectrum: Medicare, individual and family health insurance, life insurance, retirement planning and annuities, as well as supplemental coverage like dental, vision, and cancer insurance. Each of these plays a vital role in protecting families, yet many people don’t fully understand what’s available to them or how to make the best choices.
Our mission is education first. We want to empower people to make informed decisions about their health and financial future, whether they’re nearing retirement, raising a family, or simply trying to find affordable coverage. Insurance shouldn’t feel like a maze—it should be a tool that gives people peace of mind and a better quality of life.
While our roots are here in West Virginia, our vision extends across multiple states. We want to be a true pillar of support in our local community, but also a trusted resource for anyone who needs guidance. At the heart of it, we’re here to serve—because when people feel secure about their health and financial wellbeing, it changes everything.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three qualities stand out as the most impactful in my journey: perseverance, adaptability, and a genuine desire to serve others.
Perseverance was essential because my path wasn’t linear. I faced struggles with addiction, personal setbacks, and career detours. There were many points where it would have been easier to give up—but choosing to keep moving forward, even when the road was hard, made all the difference. My advice for anyone starting out is to remember that success rarely comes overnight. Stay the course, even when progress feels slow, and trust that persistence will pay off.
Adaptability also shaped my journey. The insurance industry, like life itself, is constantly changing. Being willing to learn new approaches, embrace new opportunities, and even reinvent myself after setbacks allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. For those early in their careers, I’d say: don’t fear change—lean into it. View challenges as opportunities to sharpen your skills and discover new strengths.
Lastly, the quality that has redefined my purpose is a heart for service. At first, my drive came from wanting to provide for my family. But over time, I realized that true joy comes from helping others—whether it’s guiding someone through their Medicare options, helping a family find a solution to their health insurance issues, or simply being present in my community. My advice: focus on people, not just profit. When you make service your foundation, everything else—success, growth, fulfillment—tends to follow.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Insurance touches nearly every aspect of life—from health and financial planning to home, auto, and beyond. At the same time, every business, non-profit, and faith-based organization is working toward the same goal: providing real value to the people they serve. That’s why I’m always looking to build meaningful partnerships with referral partners across the country.
There are many services my company doesn’t directly offer, and I want to be able to connect people with trusted resources when they need them. In the same way, we’d love to be a resource for others—helping add value to what you already provide for your clients. So if you’re someone who serves your community and believes in putting people first, I’d love to connect. Together, we can create a stronger network of support that benefits everyone.
