We recently connected with Justin Verner and have shared our conversation below.
Justin, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
I use my art to rise above the haters and nay-sayers.
Growing up, I encountered my fair share of negative people and, unfortunately, it affected my overall outlook. I would ask myself: “How did these people get this way? How come they are filled with so much hate?”
I’ve come to realize it doesn’t matter. I use my writing and music to create worlds where kindness and love reign supreme.
My novel and my new single both center around the magical experience of falling in love. When I composed these two pieces, I didn’t think about the haters from my past. Instead, I was lost in the beauty of the art. Totally distracted.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As an author and musician, I like to focus on the themes of faith, hope, and love.
My novel, Jason and Catalina, explores these themes in both a light-hearted and deep way. And my new single, “Catalina”, is actually featured in the novel. Pretty cool, right?
My art is about positivity. We need some light in a dark world!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Patience. Good ideas cannot be forced – they have to come organically. This means an idea for a novel or a song may take time to develop. My advice is to trust the process.
2. Perseverance. In the beginning, you may be the only fan of your work. But if you feel there is something there, keep at it. If you enjoy your craft, then continue to push yourself and improve Eventually, others will come around.
3. Study. Learn from the greats. I used to love learning the chords to my favorites songs on guitar. Eventually, I used those same chords to create my own original tunes!
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m open to collaborating with other writers and musicians in the Phoenix area!
