Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Justin Williams. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Justin, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
When reflecting on my journey and the resilience that fuels it, it draws deeply from the diverse tapestry of my personal experiences. Growing up in Baltimore, I frequently visited the Baltimore museum of art, I was immersed in a culture rich with vibrant colors, textures, and stories. From an early age, I found solace and inspiration in the visual narratives that surrounded me.
My path to resilience began as a young artist navigating the complexities of isolation, abandonment, family discord, institutional discrimination, and economic recessions where every obstacle became an opportunity for growth. The challenges I encountered were not only external but also internal, shaping my perspective and strengthening my determination. It was during these formative years that I honed my skills and learned the art of adaptation, much like the dynamic interplay of light and shadow that defines my photographic work.
One pivotal moment in my journey was , during the pandemic, my father whom I never had an intimate relationship with died, I lost my first teaching job out of college, and my relationship went sour after infidelity, all within a two week period. This revolutionary chapter of my life was a turning point that could have derailed my artistic pursuits. Instead, it fueled my commitment to transcend adversity through creativity. In those moments, I discovered the transformative power of storytelling, capturing the essence of resilience in every frame.
As I transitioned to my current photography series, ‘The Duality of Black and White,’ I drew upon these experiences to create a visual narrative that mirrors the complexities of life. The stark contrast between light and shadow, much like the contrasts in my own journey, becomes a powerful metaphor for resilience. It’s a testament to the idea that beauty can emerge even in the most challenging circumstances.
Moreover, my resilience is deeply intertwined with my commitment to continuous learning and self-improvement. The pursuit of education has been a cornerstone of my journey, providing me with the tools to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of photography. Whether through formal education or self-directed learning, I’ve cultivated a habit of embracing new techniques, technologies, and artistic approaches.
In essence, my resilience is a product of both personal perseverance and the unwavering support of my education and Buddhist community. It’s an ongoing journey of self-discovery, creative exploration, and a commitment to turning challenges into opportunities for artistic expression. My hope is that through sharing my story, I not only promote my new studio in Baltimore but also inspire others to find strength in their own narratives, embracing the inherent beauty that lies in resilience.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on my journey, I’ve found resilience to be my guiding light, turning setbacks into stepping stones and transforming challenges into opportunities for growth. A commitment to continuous learning has been the fuel propelling me forward, encouraging an open mind and a curiosity that shapes each new chapter. Effective communication, both the art of expressing ideas and actively listening, has been the bridge connecting me to others and navigating the complexities of my path. To those embarking on their own journey, I’d say: embrace failures as gateways to wisdom, stay open to the wonders of the unknown, and foster relationships that become pillars of strength. Prioritize self-care, set clear goals, and dance with adaptability as life unfolds its unpredictable rhythm. Remember, the journey is as much about the lessons discovered in quiet moments of reflection as it is about the victories celebrated in the spotlight. You’re not alone; your resilience, learning, and connections will carry you through
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
In this moment, the primary obstacle I face is navigating the delicate balance between pursuing my passion and meeting the demands of daily life. The challenge lies in harmonizing my creative endeavors with the practical aspects of work and responsibilities. To overcome this, I am diligently crafting a schedule that prioritizes both creativity and responsibilities, carving out dedicated moments for my artistic pursuits amidst the daily hustle. It’s a journey of self-discovery and time management, where each day becomes an opportunity to refine the delicate dance between passion and practicality, ensuring that both aspects of my life thrive harmoniously.
