Meet Jwalt

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jwalt. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jwalt below.

Jwalt, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

I feel like I was born resilient. As a baby, I had a hole in my heart, and the doctors said I would need surgery. But a few months later, it healed on its own, and the doctors called it a miracle. That experience has always stuck with me and shows true resilience. On top of that, I’m from Oakland, CA, a place that’s known for its resilience. The culture here breeds strength and determination, and I feel like that’s a big part of who I am.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a Two Time Grammy Considred- Top 100 Charting recording artis, songwrtiter, and published author from Oakland California. I started off doing poetry when i was 8 years old and that slowly transitioned to writing raps and telling my story through beats and rhymes.

I have shared stages with legendary artists such as Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, Common, Talib Kweli, E-40, G-Eazy, T-Pain, Sheila E, and more. My music has been featured on national platforms such as NBA Countdown on ESPN and the Graduate Together special hosted by President Obama on ABC, which boosted my national visibility. I have garnered co-signs from hip-hop legends like 50 Cent, Common, and Black Thought, Grammy-nominated artist Logic, and Tony and Grammy Award-winning actor and rapper Daveed Diggs.

I am graduate of the prestigious NYU Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music.

I have collaborated with major brands like ESPN, MTV, BET, Revolt, LRG, and Under Armour.

Additionally, I am part-owner of the professional soccer team Oakland Roots

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Having full creative control for the music I make.
Learning about the music business
and being authentic to who I am!
For people who are interested in the music industry, I would tell them to make the music that they want to make. Don’t feel pressured to make music that other people want you to make. Be authentically yourself!

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me was believe in me. From the moment I told them that I wanted to be a musician when I was 11 years old, they supported my dreams fully. They took me to all of my shows, encouraged me to go to an arts high school, and college for it. Thats the biggest gift I could ask for.
